Well, I had planned to take AP Calc AB this year along with AP Stats and AP Psych. My schedule just came out and Calc AB is not on it. My counselor said that they slotted students that were taking Calc AB and BC into the classes and since I wasn’t taking Calc BC I got bumped out. With this I will now have just 5 total AP classes at graduation. Will the absence of AP calc on my transcripts look weak?
What math class are you taking now?
I would get your mom and go set up a meeting with your counselor to discuss. This is a very big issue. See if you can get placed in a calc class at a neighboring high school or at a community college if there is truly no space left. Or ask to change to calc BC if that will help you snag a spot. This is a big deal.
ConcernedRabbit, I am going to be a Senior and I took Pre-Calc and got an A the past semester. My planned major is nursing so in a way I think that the Calc is not necessary , it is just that I don't want it to appear that I am dodging AP Calc and affect the impression of my course rigor.
Also, we did set up a meeting with my counselor and at this point the only bright spot is that I am first on the waiting list if a slot opens up.
If you don’t get into an AP Calc, what math class are you currently scheduled to take?
If I don’t get AP calc I am not scheduled to take any math class, what other choices there are as a follow up to Pre-calc?. AP Statistics is the closest thing I am taking to it
I don’t think your school can simply not get you into a math class…if there are so many people on the waitlist, I’m curious to hear why they don’t offer another period to take AP AB calc.
You should talk to your guidance counselor and involve your parents if necessary to try to get your into calculus next year.
If you don’t get AP calculus ask your guidance counselor to include in his/her letter or recommendation that you did not take AP Calc due to a scheduling issue at the HS.
the OP is not without a math class; s/he has AP Stats.
At many schools, the setting of teacher schedules necessitates that required classes be staffed first. Electives are staffed later. So if only offering one section means that all the math teachers have full schedules, then there is no hope of getting a section added.
But as others have said, the OP and the parents can certainly talk to the GC.
