I just got a likely letter

Dear Varun:
I am writing to inform you that your application to The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science has been evaluated and that you have been designated as a ‘likely’ candidate for admission. As long as you maintain good standing in your senior year, you can expect to receive favorable word when admissions packets are mailed on March 30th.

i'm kind of excited...does this improve my chance of acceptance at all?

EEKKKKKKKKKK!!!!! Me too! (This is a very good sign!!!)

I wish I had recieved one. Good for you guys though. Is it possible that I might get one soon though?

wow congrats varun. Anyone know if they do this for just the engineering school or for Columbia College too?

Mine was for the Fu Foundation so I don't know if the college sent theirs yet.

i don't think cc sends out likelies

I'm going to go out on a limb here and call the bluff. That doesn't sound like a likely letter would sound. And, it is way too early.

I could be totally wrong here. If I am, you have my congratulations.

The Committee on Admissions was impressed with your achievement and interest in engineering and applied science. You and your family have every right to be proud of your success.

Congratulations on your success to date. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the professors in the departments listed below. Members of the admission office will be in selection committee until the end of March and our students will be on spring break the week of March 13th. We hope you will be able to join us on campus for an open house event on the 21st of April to visit labs and meet with faculty and students.

P.S. Please note that a hardcopy of the above was mailed out this afternoon.

1) Columbia2002: I really doubt those two would come here to lie about something like that.

2) To those who got it, what were your stats?

I've heard of people in past years getting likely letters from SEAS, so I think these are pretty legit.

did it come via email?

Now that there are two, I'm likely wrong.

But it is very early. And, most likely letters are more wishy-washy than "you can expect to."

Maybe it is marketing. This has got to help the school's yield.

A girl I know got a likely letter from Dartmouth last week. Is it really that early?

It is indeed quite early; most schools send out likelies in the first couple weeks of March.

i got a likely letter from Northwestern yesterday, so maybe it is not as early as we think.

I got mine in an email with the
subject: Your Application to Columbia
timestamp: Wed, 22 Feb 2006 15:55:04 -0500

It is very early. Columbia doesn't even start looking at apps until late-Feb. As soulofheaven said, likely letters generally go out in mid-March.

do you think they were all sent yesterday?

i got it through e-mail today, around 4:00 (est)

i think baykin was asking whether all the likelies that are to be sent were all sent yesterday, or is the mailing a process/in multiple bunches.
