Hello i just got an SPN for intro business stats. i called the dept and it was very easy. but she said that this means i am guaranteed a seat in the course. how so? what does this mean? is she right? i am an entering freshman btw.

1) “how so?”
You got a special permission number.

2) “what does this mean?”
It means you are guaranteed a seat in the course.

3) “is she right?”
Yes.

If she gave you the special permission number it means you will have a seat in the class. Did she tell you what to do with the number? (do you use it to register yourself online?) I forget what my son did, sorry.

When you go on Webreg, you can register for a closed course and enter the SPN to “unlock” it.

Yep, rualum is right. You must have gotten a special permission number from her, and you take that number, and go on to webreg.rutgers.edu. Under the “Add To Registration” section, you will see Indexes 1 to 10. Put the special permission number that you got from her, and click “Add Courses -->”

Then you’re done. Mind you, special permission numbers generally expire pretty quickly, so you want to do it ASAP.

are you an incoming freshmen ?
i didnt get into chemistry cause of the space. can i call the department and ask for a special number because im a freshmen

Yeah I’m a freshman. Idk about chemistry because it tends to be difficult to get into that class due to the high demand, but be sure to call. And what does it mean that they expire quickly? Because for me webreg is going to open on the fifth of September, will my SPN expire by then?

They have a limited number of special permission numbers that they give out. I have not heard of them expiring.

When I requested a SPN for General Physics, it said that it expires within 24 hours but maybe it works differently for your class.

firered if you are concerned about your number expiring why not call your advisor. Maybe they can give you a better answer.

Maybe RUKnight knows the answer.

What is a Special Permission number and when is it necessary?

Special permission numbers are course/section related. These numbers are needed by students in order to register for courses that have reached their stop points/closed to additional students. In addition, special permission numbers are required to override the class year, school, or major restrictions on a course.

Please be aware that if you give a student a special permission number to override a class year, school, or major restriction, the special permission number will allow the student to register for the course even if the course has reached its stop point, resulting in too many students in the course (not enough seats for the total number registered for the course).

Instructors will receive a list of special permission numbers from their departments. These numbers are not generated by the Registrars Office. Requests for additional special permission numbers must be made through your department. Requiring special permission numbers after the add period is over allows an instructor to determine if a student may enter his/her class at the late date.

Instructors must keep a record of the student(s) to whom they have given a special permission number. Please check with your department regarding their policy for special permission numbers and how they are assigned.

Special permission numbers are course/section specific and may only be used once. They cannot be shared among students.
