I just got accepted to $4000 pell grant

$2000/semester.

Do I get to keep the money?
or does the money become unavailable after the semester's over?

some plz explain to me with clarity :(

Pell grants are federal funds given to you to help you complete the semester. Basically, it is free money only if you complete the semester. Individuals dropping out after receiving the check are forced to pay back funds.

So let's say that out of $2000, I spent about $1200 on tuition and textbooks. That means the remaining $800 will be mine and can be used on whatever I want as long as I don't drop out?

Yup, if they give you $2000 for school but you only end up spending $1200, the rest is essentially yours. This is the problem with grants. The government gives out money for students that is supposed to be for school, not personal use. This isn't supposed to be some sort of extra welfare program (but it essentially is).

Just curious, how much money do you're parents make that made you eligible for this pell grant?

Sorry for the rant, its just that I know a ton of people who get these grants and end up keeping more than half the money and spending it on things such as down payments for new cars... ect.

can we still apply for pell for winter/spring?

Well, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the Pell Grant supposed to be used for ALL costs related to your education? Wouldn't this encompass nearly ALL things? Such as deposit for an apartment...down payment for a car that transports you back and forth to work AND school...etc.?

Some people do use it for the wrong things, but just like the welfare program, holistically it is nearly essential for some students. That's why there is a cap on the amount one can receive each year. Too bad I don't qualify :(.

Well the thing is.. I'm planning on transferring to a 4 year institute next fall (I attend community college right now), and I was wondering if it was ok for me to save the left-over grants to use it to cover for my tuition when I transfer.

Ja it's ok. You can literally use it for whatever you want.

Yes you can use it to save it for next year, that's what I am doing now with my Pell grant as well. But also using it to cover other costs like gas, books, etc. And a lot of times, food!

you get a check for 4000. what you do with it is your own business. so go buy some crack :)

DHL3: Save as much as you want. Invest in a few stocks and it should be a lot easier to get through the 3rd/4th years of college when money will be extremely tight.

but if you do end up having some savings and stocks- then the downside is you won't get financial aid or it would be less, isn't it?

pbb_mirabella: it depends. I'm sure DHL will spend a significant portion of the pell grant. Afterall, it is expensive to go through college even living at home. There's books ($500), Gasoline ($320-$480), Food (depends), etc. So I mean if a person is able to keep a modest budget, there isn't much left over. With that said, individuals who qualify for the full pell grant are essentially under the threshold for maximum aid. A few hundred to a thousand saved up will not directly hurt him for financial aid(given that the family income is significantly below the pell grant award threshold).

I applied for the single mothers pell grant and it said my estimate was $5,550 and my direct stafford loan was $9,500 are these amounts exact? Will I get this much?

HW1993, please post instead on the FA & Scholarship forum, even if you are a transfer student. There are many very experienced members there; state that you are a transfer student if it is applicable.
