I just want to know if I even have a shot

Hey guys. So basically, I’m 25. I had about a 2.9 in high school and fresh out went to a 4 year culinary school. I did two years there and decided to move home because of the cost of the school, and I started going to community college. It’s bad. Like, really, really bad.

I’ve been in an abusive relationship for the last five years and it’s seriously taken it out on my grades. You can tell in my transcript the times when things were good versus when they aren’t. I just left my abusive significant other (and he’s no longer legally allowed anywhere near me) which is great for me - but now it’s a matter of, oh crap, can I even get in to a terrible school somewhere?

Basically, here are my grades. I’ve got another three semesters to repeat all the classes that I’ve failed/gotten W’s in, so those will be “covered” GPA wise. I’ll basically be leaving community college with a 3.0, but with a loooot of baggage behind it.

…It’s bad boys. I guess I’m looking for advice. I don’t want to give up on my academic career, especially after last semester with this person out of my life, I can obviously do this without that pressure from them. Do you think theres a way to talk to my current counselor to have some of these removed, do you think it will matter on a transcript, do you think I can explain this to admissions officers? At this point I don’t even care where I get in as long as it’s accredited, I just want to know if anyone has any advice or thinks I have a shot.

I may be mistaken, but I think that you will be admitted to Arizona State University in Tempe (Phoenix area) as well as to the University of Arizona in Tucson.

It would be helpful to know your state of residence & what you would like to study.

Portland State University in Portland, Oregon should be another option.

Thank you for replying. I’m looking to study history or english and get my teaching credential to teach high school or elementary. I’m in California right now, but at this point I’ll go anywhere that will take me, so location isn’t an issue

Portland State’s main focus is education, but out-of-state tuition is triple ($9.100 versus $27,060) the tuition rate for residents. Might be worthwhile to live & work in Oregon for a year in order to qualify for in-state rates.

P.S. Your community college advisor should be able to direct you to Cal State universities that will accept you. Cal State tuition is about $7,000 per year for California residents.

Could you retake some of the courses you failed or enroll again into your community college as a second degree? Then, after you do well, do the transferring again? You should probably start by retaking the courses you withdrew and failed.

I would ask about Academic Renewal at your CC to see if you can remove some your past deficient grades.

What is your CSU transfer GPA? Below is a link with the average CSU transfer GPA by CSU campus which could help you target prospective schools based on your GPA. Staying in California might be the best and affordable option.

Where would you like to teach? Getting your Education degree in the state in which you want to teach is important.
