I wrote my common app essay about community service. Can it get any more cliche? The problem is I actually really like it and have been working on it for a few months now. It is kinda hitting me though that I may have made a big mistake and should scratch it and go for one of the things that is actually interesting and different about myself. Ugh! Help what do I do?
There’s a great quote which essentially says “there are no cliche topics, only cliche essays.”
If it’s a great essay about something you’re passionate about then don’t throw it out just because of the topic. Have some people read it (English teachers are great resources) and let you know if it comes off too cliche. If it is a bit cliche you can tweak it without scraping the topic entirely.
If you’re not that into community service and it was an attempt to show that you’re a good person to adcoms then I’d recommend a new topic. Genuineness in community service essays is key.

Sigh. First, go over the essay with a fine tooth comb to check your spelling, grammar and word usage.
Cliché is a noun. Clichéd is an adjective.
Observe.
It is true that community service is a CLICHÉ as an essay topic. However, a well-written and interesting essay on community service will not necessarily be CLICHÉD.
@millie210 what the heck chill out a bit, thanks for the passive aggressive advice…
OK. Submit an essay with poor English.
