I know I'm starting to sound obsessed but . . .

What do kids wear to music camps in Boston and Texas in the heat of summer? Somehow basketball or cargo shorts and concert t-shirts seems a bit informal but the kid is not a polo shirt kid and only has one nicer button up short sleeve shirt so I thought I'd ask. He heads out the day after school gets out so it's something that I can take care of early (if necessary) so as not to be rushing around creating stress the last week of school. Is there a casual, cool middle ground that someone can recommend?

My daughter has been to FSU and Oberlin music camps and it is t-shirts and shorts, so I’m guessing Texas is the same. It is hot down here and casual comfort rules the day. Usually they tell you what is needed for “performance” and that is usually black pants and a white shirt or a suit/nice dress if a solo.

Re Boston, do you mean Boston itself, or Tanglewood in Lenox MA?

NEC - jazz

I’ll tell you why I wonder - I watched a video clip of Wynton Marsalis doing a master class at Loyola NO and he kind of castigated the kids for wearing regular kid clothes and not honoring the occasion by spiffing up. That could be just him, but I don’t want my kid to be the sore thumb in a bad way. I also don’t want to be the overbearing mom who makes him wear a collared shirt and have everyone else show up in teen casual.

D did take a “nice” outfit to Oberlin to attend faculty performances and guest masterclasses, but they told us what to pack. Throw in a nice shirt or two just in case.

See, this is why I crowdsource all my wackiest questions - that way I can seem perfectly normal to my kids ;)

I can answer exactly what to where to NEC Jazz. T-Shirt and Shorts are fine, trust me. It is what the ensemble coaches will be wearing. BTW, most buildings are a bit chilly in Boston in the summer because they over-air condition them. So your son might want to have another layer for when he is inside. Your son might want to pack one performance outfit. Which can be as simple as a pair of jeans or Khaki pants with a button down shirt or just a plain t-shirt. Funky, Quirky is fine. It really will not matter nobody is going to care. I have even seen a NEC prep coaches wear sweat pants. It is not unusual for an ensemble to attempt to coordinate or do something fun with their dress for performing. But it might be that after only a short time together the group is not comfortable doing that. And if it does and your son needs say a black T-Shirt there are stores nearby where he can buy one.

Perfect! Problem solved! Now my mind can move on to more important things. thanks ;
