I know there must be people who read this...

Anyone want to talk about Muhlenberg? I'm pretty sure that's where I'll be going next fall!

Hi,

I'm currently a sophomore at muhlenberg and am very happy with my decision to go here. If you have any questions i'd be happy to answer them.

Hi! People keep telling me that I should go to my other school because all of the kids at Muhlenberg are "preppy white rich snobs" and that "the fraternities/sororities make up the entire social life". Obviously, I'm going to make my own choice, regardless of what other people tell me, but I am wondering if this is true, because I don't think it is entirely true. Also, how bad is Allentown, because I've heard different opinions about that too (from people saying they wouldn't want to spend 4 years there to people saying it's really not at all as bad as people claim it is). and finally, do athletics have a big following, do most students stay during the weekends, and can you always find things to do? Thanks for trying to answer my questions. I think it really helps to talk to current students because they actually know whats going on.

Muhlenberg's reputation as being preppy is exaggeratted. I have never met anyone who acted like he was entitled to be here. Many students have a work study or another type of job, and don't take their education for granted.
While there may not be the greatest amount of ethnic and regional diversity that you would find at a large university, the campus is religiously diverse, and politically, while leaning liberal (students voted 70%-30% for Kerry in November), there is good oppurtunity for balanced debate, where opinions are respected.
The part of Allentown where Muhlenberg is located, is a nice subarban neighborhood, with plenty of restaurants, stores, and 2 movie theaters 1 of which shows arts films. East of the campus in the more urban 19th street area, there is numerous revitalization. While downtown Allentown is no Philadelphia or New York, there is a beautiful symphony hall, and dining for those who venture there.
On campus there is usually music department or theater department show almost every weekend. The Activities council (MAC) brings in comedians, bands, dances, poker tournaments, with a few events each weekend. While greek life is significant its not the only thing one can do.
Athletic events are popular, and the school is not lacking in spirit. Lastly Muhlenberg is not a suitcase school, and very few go home on weekends.
I hope this helps.

Ninerpin My daughter has the same concerns. Loves the programs, campus, mall nearby, but concerned about the students. She will attend the accepted student day April 16th to take one last look. Will you be attending?

I wish I could attend the accepted student day but I'll be on vacation during that week so I can't make it. If you think of it, have her post on here afterwards, if not thats okay too.

Thanks liskd! So glad to know there are things to do on the weekends, besides Greek parties. Do you have any knowledge about the business, bio, pshyc, music or dance programs? We know about the great premed program and med school acceptance rate, but wondering if this is true for other departments. How much of the student body goes Greek and do these parties dominate the social scene? How difficult is it to get to NYC by public transportation? Thanks!!!

The business, bio, and dance programs are pretty popular, and an extension to the science building, is going to begin construction this summer. The psych program seems to be strong, with numerous oppurtunities for research. I'm a music major, and this department is the fastest growing in the school, with an amazing faculty. I believe around 30 percent of the school is involved in Greek life. Getting to New York through public transportation, is easy with the Bieber bus company. Its 15 dollars oneway, to the port authority in new york city, and the trip takes 1 hour and 45 minutes. The school shuttle can take you to the bus station.

Our D will be attending Muhlenberg this Fall. She fell in love with the campus last summer when we visited. We will also be attending the accepted student day on April 16th. We live outside of Philla. so we don't have too far to travel. Where is everyone else coming from?

As a music major, do you know anything about the piano instuctors? My daughter is planing on a neuroscience major, but also wants to continue piano study. Do they charge for piano lessons? Thanks again!

We will be attending from Long Island. D is still undecided so will take a last look.

There is one fulltime and three adjuct piano professors. I've heard good things about all of them. Unless you are a music major, lessons are 350 dollars a semester. Muhlenberg also plays a host to a piano recital series, with four world famous pianists performing each year. On the accepted students day the music department will have a table so you can find out more.

applicantmum, jacisme and ninerpin if you're still checking in here, I have a s who is a freshman at Muhlenberg. He loves it!! The student body is unbelievably friendly and he has lots to do----- too much, actually. Learned to manage his time the hard way. I'm amazed at what he has told me about his teachers and the administration- they are so caring. He loves the music department and it seems that his academic courses are very good too. I went to one of the MT productions this winter and was impressed!! Wow they are GOOD! Anyway, according to him, who started school there totally against frats, he says that they aren't your typical animal house places at all, and definitely don't dominate the scene. Please post if you hae any more questions.

We had a beautiful day today at Muhlenberg. The weather was perfect as was every aspect of our day. The info. sessions, speakers, students, lunch, dorm tours, activity and academic fairs, were all very organized, informative, and worth while. It confirmed our D's decision to attend this fall.
Andi, which dorm is your S living in? Which does he think is best for freshmen and why?? Any other inside tips? Thanks!

We attended yesterday's program also with D. While we haven't signed the deposit check yet, D seems positive about Muhlenberg. The day was very informative. Does your S have any female friends in Brown? D is wondering if it is a quiet alternative or if it is too isolating for a freshman. Any inside tips appreciated. Thanks.

Hi! I am for sure going to Muhlenberg, I sent in my stuff earlier this week. I am also going for the theater department, with emphasis in musical theater. I chose it because the atmosphere seemed so friendly, and there definetly seems to be a lot of opportunities, especially in the theater department. Anyway, I'm really excited that other people are going there, particularily for theater, and would love to get to know any future Muhlenbergers..or something like that. Also, I talked to some students as far as housing goes, and basically I had all three places reccomended to me..Brown is quieter, but a great place to live especially if you want a little more privacy and the rooms are bigger, but it is not a problem meeting people. One guy lived in Prosser and really liked it. I also heard about a Theater floor that they have at Waltz (which is air conditioned and has larger rooms) that could be a good option for anyone wanting to do theater things. This is just what I have heard so I thought I would pass it along. Yay!

Congratulations on choosing Muhlenberg. I lived in Walz my freshman year, and its very nice. The fact that it is air conditioned was the number one factor in me choosing to live there.

I have made up my mind to attend Muhlenberg! And I'm really looking forward to it. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the accepted students day because I was away on vacation, but I did visit last spring and loved the school.

D sent her deposit to Muhlenberg!!!! The accepted student day reminded her of all the reasons she loved it in the first place. She must send in the housing form. We have heard Prosser is the party dorm. True or false? Is Brown too isolating?? Many thanks. I will put her in touch with you.

My first post on the CC, I have been an "addict"offor the last year.
I have gleaned so much from everyone here
that I want to "give" back if I can.

My daughter will be a freshman next year, deciding on Muhlenberg after looking at Dickinson/Gettysburg and others.
An important factor in her decision was having her cousin graduate from Muhlenberg a couple years ago, meeting her friends, and hearing what a great place it is.

We received the big packet about the "advising days' in early June and I am so happy they are welcoming the students so early in the summer!
Congrats to all attending.......
