What's special about Muhlenberg?

For anyone attending, or whose child attends--what can you tell us about the school (setting, academics, social life). Any info would be appreciated!

Hi Bridie, I will give this a shot, since I have D who is a freshman at Muhlenberg.

Muhlenberg is very well respected as a school that prepares students very well for graduate school, law and medical school. In fact, it is particularly known for Pre-Med.

But, it doesn't stop at that. Muhlenberg has a fairly new ( within 4 years) Performing Arts Center, and a very well respected Theatre Arts Dept. Check Princeton Review where it was listed as one of top 10 Theatre Arts Department.

I have visited many LAC's in Penn and while Muhlenberg has a SMALL campus, the facilities are quite plush- the dining room is better than Gettysburg, Dickinson and other similar schools.
A new Athletic Center opened last year and it overlooks the track and football field through a two story window.

M is known for small classes, friendly caring Professors- my niece - now a lawyer graduated four years ago, and backs this up. It is not hype.

As a parent we are extremely pleased with the June Advising Days we attended, and the communication from the President of the College to Parents about ongoing issues.

I will say that there might be three distinct groups on campus .........the theatre arts, pre-meds and jocks.

Have you visited it? I would be happy to answer any other questions you might have. What other schools are you considering?

Thanks. I'm a mom, just beginning research for my soph daughter (and clearly obsessed with the college process since my son went through it (he's now a college freshman as well.) We'll probably go down and look at some Pa schools next year, including Lehigh and Lafayette, Bucknell and maybe Muhlenberg.

Birdie- My husband and I graduated from Bucknell, my cousin from Lehigh, my niece attended Lafayette for a week, ended up going to Muhlenberg where my D is a Freshman :)

Our S just got accepted to Bucknell

I can't help but ask: what made your niece leave Lafayette after one week? And what was so different about Muhlenberg? We're looking at both for a current junior. Thanks!

Lafayette is an excellent school, and her decision to leave was personal and had NOTHING to do with Lafayette.

She decided to go to Muhlenberg because she had a friend there, who loved it and this made her transition away from home easier.

Lafayette is more comparable to Lehigh and Bucknell-all offering engineering programs. Muhlenberg feels much smaller, more intimate.

Muhlenberg, Lehigh and Lafayette are very close to each other, and can be easily visited in two days.

Bluejay are you considering Dickinson, too? A very nice school-

We have visted Lafayette, Muhlenberg, and Dickinson. Dickinson is a tad too isolated for the likes of this student. The overall concern about all of them, though, is the size. Do kids "outgrow" these schools by the time they are seniors? Will that warm, nurturing feeling that seems so appropriate now be stiffling in the years to come? The focus on Greek life is another negative factor.
Thanks for all of your input. In the glossy brochures every school is a winner!

Bluejay, my thoughts, too. The Junior year abroad is popular and helps get through those stifling years.

What are you considering at this point? A larger school, one closer to a city?

For my niece her field hockey team kept her very busy in the fall, and her boyfriend whom she is marrying this summer, was there, too. So she had a nice group of friends and kept busy. The key might be to find that niche .........and then study abroad for a break.

My D was recently accepted. At this point, she is leaning towards going there. Everyone we met, was genuinely nice and "welcoming". Also, I think it has a lot to offer for a small school.

Hi everyone... I'm from Greenville, South Carolina, and I'll be going to Muhlenberg next year. I'm a Dana fellow and would like to double major in vocal music and psychology. I was wondering if anyone has any specific advice for me about Muhlenberg (or about living in the north in general!). Thanks!

sarah88 - have you visited Muhlenberg? Hopefully, you are familiar with the campus. Allentown doesn't offer too much for college students, although there is decent shopping center about 15 minutes away, and a Muhlenberg shuttle runs there on weekends.

My D's friends have a car, so she hasn't used it, yet.

Blue Mountain, a nice Pocono-type, ski resort is in Allentown, if you have ever wanted to try snowboarding/ skiing, you will be very close.

We live near Atlantic City, and Allentown has significantly colder weather than we do here. It is in a pocket that gets more snow, lower temperatures than Philadelphia/ NJ.

So pack your scarves and winterwear !

You will have the chance to take trips to NYC, to broadway plays, (my D hasn't done this either) but I talked to a parent whose D (theatre arts major) was enjoying some nice discounted broadway ticket prices.

Daughter says everyone is friendly- easy to meet people. There is a psych club---D did JOIN this.

Two nights ago D joined an all girl Volleyball rec team.

Start reading the weekly Muhlenberg newspaper online to get a feel for happenings, and do note the Public safety information. Always good to be informed.
Hope this helped :)

Hi Sarah, My D may be going to Muhlenberg next year, too. She will also major in Psych and minor in music/instrumental. We live in CT, so we are used to the weather up here. Actually love the "4" seasons. Yesterday, she received the book, "Living Here in Allentown", written by Muhlenberg students. I thought it was terrific and a great intro to the area. The more experience she/we have with Muhlenberg, the more she is leaning towards attending. She is just going to revisit one or two other schools, to make sure. Good luck to you and how exciting this time in your life is!

Blue Mountain is not in Allentown, although Dorney Park, a water park, is. Dorney Park is a couple of miles north of Muhlenberg.

Muhlenberg is located in the suburban part of Allentown rather than in the inner city, which is economically depressed with a relatively high crime rate. The neighborhood surrounding the college is beautiful.

momwaitingfornew - how far away is Blue Mountain from Muhlenberg? My D did not get there this winter, even though she took her snowboard up.

Thanks for pointing this out .........

I think Blue Mountain is about 30 minutes away, although I'm not certain. I live in the Lehigh Valley, but I don't ski.

My D will be a freshman at Muhlenberg in the fall. We look forward to hearing about the accepted student weekend too. Since we live in CA it was not in the cards for her to attend.

Thanks!

Congrats on your D's acceptance and choice. Our family is going to be visiting Muhlenburg in June (prior to the CMU Precollege program).

Does your D have strong academics?? Did she audition for the theater scholarships??

She is not particularly strong academically. Although she has a 3.6 unweighted GPA she is in the top 20% of her high achieving public school here in CA. Her AP scores were 27, and her SATS around 1310 on the old scale. She had excellent recommendations, many extracurriculars relating to theatre and community service. She did send in an audition tape, and recieved a talent scholarship, but no merit aid.

ABC - this is the local designation for the three towns
Allentown, Bethleham and Easton.. The local airport in Bethleham is known as the ABC airport. Route 22 and Highway 78 connect all three towns whose borders flow into each other.

Easton is the home of Lafayette College, Bethleham home to Lehigh and Moravian Colleges and Allentown home to Muhlenberg and Cedar Chest Colleges.

My S1 and S2 graduated from Lafayette and my S-i-L attended Muhlenberg in the 60ths. I have visited Lafayette, Lehigh, Moravian and Muhlenberg in the past two years with D2.

All three towns have suffered economic reverses in the past 20+ years, with resultant downgrades in the living conditions.

Muhlenberg is in a nice section of town, but the downtown and Rt 22 corridor are struggling.

Lafayette is a frat college with all the resultant + and -'s of the Greek system. Lehigh is still a predominantly Engineering school and Bethleham as a town is trying to recover the closing of the massive Bethleham Steel properties which are close to the Lehigh campus.

Muhlenberg is a relatively small campus in a residential area that has escaped the downturn to Allentown (which had been a designated All-American CIty in the late 60ths).

Franklin and Marshall in Lancaster and Gettysburg colleges are located in economically strong cities, have equally challenging academics and much safer surrounding area IMO. Anyone looking to eastern Pa should consider these two colleges and their rival , Dickinson in Carlisle.

Actually, it's ABE. :-)
