I'm a freshman at a school that I absolutely adore! Really, although it wasn't among my top picks at the beginning, it turned out to be perfect for me.

The thing is, I'm a nursing major, and I'm not doing well in anatomy&physiology. If I don't pass (get a C because for the nursing program, a C is the lowest passing grade), I don't know how motivated I'll be to retake the course. A lot of it depends on if I can get a different professor...but even if I do retake it, that will put me behind and I'll have to find a way to take A&P II over the summer which would put a damper on my plans of being a camp counselor, though I guess that would work fine with being a CNA.

So you know, towards the end of the semester, I'm going to have to figure out what to do. If I retake it and pass, great, I'll be on my way to being a nurse. If I decide not to, there's a problem.

I've said for awhile now that if for some reason nursing doesn't work out, I want to be a preschool teacher. That's all fine and great, but my school doesn't have early childhood education. They start with childhood education (grades 1-6 I believe), so I would have to transfer, and that's something that I would like to do even less than retake A&P.

Needless to say, I'm a little lost right now. Opinions?

I think you need to slow down and take it easy! Step it up in anat/phys and finish out the year strongly. You’re questioning your career choice over one class, which is just irrational - finish out the year strongly and don’t quit unless it’s because you don’t enjoy being a nurse, not because the prerequisites/courses are difficult. If you really don’t enjoy the bulk of your courses and don’t see yourself being a nurse, that’s a different story, and one that could change course with a transfer, but it seems very premature to be thinking about it.

A&P is the only “nursing” class I’m taking, so I can’t yet say anything about enjoying nursing or not. I know myself, and my motivation to repeat things is almost nonexistent. I’m currently in A&P I, and there’s still A&P II. If I pass A&P I, it’ll be fine and good because I’ll then be able to go onto A&P II, but if I don’t…I’ll have to repeat or drop out of the program…and if I drop out of the program, I have to transfer because there’s no other major here that I could see myself in.

I have to agree with wayward_trojan: You should focus your energies at this point on doing as well as you can in A & P I and evaluate things at the end of the semester when you see how it all plays out. You will have plenty of time after you get your first semester grades to decide whether to submit transfer applications. In the meantime, you might look more deeply at the majors that WOULD be available to you at your current institution if you decided you would prefer to change majors and stay at your there rather than change schools. That is always an option and perhaps there is a major like Communication Disorders, or something of that nature, at your school which could combine your interests in the medical field and teaching.

If you like your school, and you do decide that nursing is not for you, consider completing the Elementary Education (Grade 1-6) teacher certification program. Chances are that if you complete that degree, and you still are interested in pre-school education, you could take a short series of courses for an additional teaching endorsement or add-on certificate.

Since you are struggling so much right now in A&P, you should make an appointment with the instructor to get his/her advice on better study strategies. You aren’t the only person struggling with the course.

1travlr - My school is small, and only has like 35 majors…AND, nursing is the only medically related one unless you count bio with a pre-health profession focus. The only other thing my school has that I would actually be interested in is education, but they don’t have early childhood so…

hmom5 - Yes, I have considered that…but I already know that I could make it as a preschool teacher, and that I would enjoy it. (I was an assistant teacher at a preschool, and that was my favorite out of all my jobs that I’ve had).

Batllo - I want to be a nurse…I just don’t know if I can do it.

happymomof1 - I love my school, and I wouldn’t want to transfer! I know there are programs like you said to expand teaching certification. I have some friends in the education program who want to do that. One problem with doing that though is at my school, education isn’t a major, so I would have to figure out something else that I like enough to major in, and I have no ideas! I’ve already talked with my professor AND my adviser, and both of them have said to suck it up and just do it. Not helpful at all. And no, I’m not the only one…probably 85% of the class is.
