I visited Wake Forest last week, and I loved it! I would like to apply Regular Decision....
Here are a few of my stats

GPA: Okay, my GPA is not stellar, because I made the mistake of taking hard APs at my school. Anyways I have a 4.70-4.75 weighted GPA and a 96 unweighted GPA.
Rank: My school is private doesn't rank, but they will say I'm in the top 10%, there's only 38 students in my class, so top 3.
APs: My school only offers 11.
Soph: AP Bio
Junior: AP Stats,AP History, AP Chem
Senior: AP Lit, AP Calc, AP French, AP Gov't
I realize people take like 9-11 APs, and I will only graduate with 8, but so far I have taken the more challenging courses in my class, and I can't take the other APs offered because they are like AP Spanish (I'm taking AP French), Studio Art (I suck at drawing), and AP Physics (I hate science and I'm bad at it). I think I will graduate with the highest number of APs though if that means anything to colleges.
Standardized tests: Okay these suck
first time: 600 m, 600 v, 740 writing
second time: 650 m, 650 v, didn't break 700 for writing
Do you guys think they will take my 650, 650, and 740 for a 2040 (which is a 1360 on the old scale)?
Extracurriculars: Varsity Tennis (6th-12th) Captain (11th, 12th) Played number 1 for school (11th) MVP (11th)
Yearbook (9th-12th) Assistant Editor (11th) Senior Editor (12th)
I have some other clubs like Student council and NHS
I have solid community service, but I don't have anything like major, I just volunteer at the hospital every week for the last two summers.
Awards: I have about 5 academic awards over 3 years and I got the Wake Forest University Book Award (11th)

I love Wake, but I don't think I can apply Early Decision. What do you think. Please be honest and say whatever you like. You won't hurt my feelings.

I will have really good Recs, I can write creative essays if thats what Wake wants to see

Also I guess I would be considered a minority since I'm asian, but I'm not like asian-asian, so I don't consider myself a minority, so I don't know if I will have any advantage being asian.

lol...first of all, take a breather because your stats are beyond awesome. The fact that ur top 3, good job. the AP's....ur doing great....don't worry about how many AP's you take...some people got in with as many as 4 or 5 AP's.......8 or even 6 is a very good number of AP's, just make sure you do well in them. Your extracurriculars are excellent. The fact that you got the book award doesn't hurt either. lol. As for the SAT scores, they're fine. Because you're asian, they'll take that fairly well into consideration when looking over your SAT score.....my only advice, if you're trying to improve on the SAT's the third time around....forget about writing and verbal and concentrate on raising your math. because you already got above a 700 in writing, and if you're a minority, then if you improve you're math, they'll totally take it easy on you when it comes to your verbal......aside from that, i'd say you've got a great shot! good luck and i hope that helps.

Hey thanks for the encouragement. I feel a little hesitant in applying to Wake Forest, because I haven't gotten 3 of my AP scores back yet, and I don't think I did very well on them. I mean I made A's (unweighted) in the class, but as for as the actual score on the AP...I don't know. Do bad grades on AP exams hurt you. I understand if you do really well (like 5s) then obviously that will help you. But do like getting 2s really count against you. I'm worried. Anyways thanks for you advice on the SAT. I don't think I will be taking it again, because I have to take some SAT IIs. I'm taking the ACT for other colleges (I know Wake doesn't take it). Anyways, any more advice on my chances would be most appreciated.

Thanks,
Sonia (Son)

dude, 9-11 aps? my school only offers 7. i took five and got wake forest scholarships. so, you're fine with 8. unless they've changed policies since updating it, the SAT lets you take your best score for each section. your ec's look good, as do your grades. your SATs are right around average, or maybe just slightly below, for wake. thus, i would say your sats are your weakest point, but still aren't bad and are more than offset by other stats. it looks like you have a really good chance. if you're sure you want to come here and can afford it, apply early decision. if not, you ought to have a good chance regular decision.

Thank you so much for responding! Ugh, I guess I sound snobby by saying 9-11 APs, its just that I've been on other threads, and people are like i took 13 APs. Thanks for the encouragement about my other stats. I love Wake Forest, and it is a right fit for me...but I also think Vanderbilt is a right fit for me. I am considering both of their early decision options, because I love Wake too! Anyways, thank you, and I'd love to hear more opinions please.

Son

ShopGirl - I was in a very similar situation last fall since I loved both Wake and Vanderbilt. I felt I would have been extremely happy at either school, though I was leaning a little bit more toward Wake. My plan was to apply Early Decision to Wake in November and if that didn't work out, Vanderbilt has an Early Decision II option in January that I would have used. I ended up getting in ED to Wake so it did not become an issue for me, but I thought that this idea might be helpful for you.

I got in with 3 AP's. (5's on each =D ) Our valedictorian took 5. school offers 7, but 2 are offered every other year (like an A,B scheme).

You'll get in. and probably with scholarships.

Wow, I didn't think many people are in the Wake vs. Vandy situation. Congratulations on your acceptance, Wake is a great school! I am tied between Wake and Vandy (except I'm leaning more towards Vanderbilt). Anyways people are usually battling between Vandy vs. Emory or Vandy vs. Duke, so I'm glad to know other people are considering Wake.
And Decisions, thanks for the encouragement. I would be thrilled to just get into Wake, much less getting in with scholarship! Haha, so thanks.

Any more opinions?

Thank you thank you thank you

plz i want 2 apply 2 wake forest and ur stats r WAY bettr than mine....i think ur in

That is so nice of you to say, I really appreciate everybody's encouragement, but at the same time I know that every year it is getting more and more competitive. But thank you guys very very much. Anymore opinions?

Oh, what they look at is that you even tried taking AP's....don't worry too much about the AP score, as long as you do well in the actual AP class, you're good to go. and for me Vandy vs. Wake...wake was for me. I dunno, just the wake air is right. Just be sure to visit both schools. Trust me, if it's the right school for you, you'd just know once you're there.

i think you've got a great shot! i know many people with similar and lower stats who got in. but of course, admissions is crazy, and no one can be completely sure of it. i'm applying this year too. my test scores are good, but my gpa isn't exceptional or anything. but my school sends kids to wake pretty frequently, and my college counselor is familiar with the admissions people, so that can't hurt. i'm hoping that i can write a great essay to boost my chances. but anyway, i think you have a great shot- your gpa is awesome and you've taken tough classes, so good luck to you!

Thanks for replying. I loved Wake, but every now and then i get nervous, because you're right, admissions is crazy. Anyways good luck to the both of us, and keep me updated!
