I made the wrong life choice.

When applying to colleges, I applied to a mix of art schools and traditional academic institutions. I had always wanted to be an artist, but was put off by the numerous forces in my life telling me that art wasn’t a real career or something that I should dedicate my life to. So I went to Northwestern University. It’s a wonderful school. But I made the wrong decision life-wise.

I want to go to an art school come Fall, but I don’t know if I should try to transfer (probably wouldn’t work considering all I would have would be a few art history credits from classes I have taken at NU) or just apply as a freshman as though I had taken a gap year. Any advice would be appreciated. As you can probably tell, this is a weird time in my life.

Are you sure that you will be able to graduate art school with an income potential to be ok on your own? What kind of classes are offered at art school that are offered at your school and transferable? Honestly here is what sounds safe to me… Finish a degree in a practical field at your current school. Do you really need a degree in art to be an artist? Can you take individual courses at the art school while you are full time at your current school? Some artists have regular jobs and do their art on the side or after years of focusing on earning money so they have the security to spend large amounts of time doing art and hanging out in galleries. What kind of art do u do and what is your major, also how are you paying for all this?
