Transferring from a Regular School to an Art School

Im currently a freshman and i know im just starting out but I guess im just looking into the future about whether or not i want to transfer.
First off Im a Marine Bio Major ( i wouldve rather be an Ecology major but theyre not easy to find at all) and plan on being an Visual Art Minor. I like my school a lot, the science courses are really good, the art program is a little lackluster tho, The reason i picked this school was because I couldnt decide if i wanted to do science or art and because there isnt an art school that has a science program i went with just going to a regular school.

However, Im still not entirely sure if I made the right decision and that I shouldve just gone with what i know i love doing (ie art) vs something im just really getting into (ie marine bio).
If I were to switch to being an art Major I dont think I would want to do it here, Id rather go to an art college where the learning would be more specialized and it would be a thousand times easier to make connections with other artists.

So while I still havent gotten anywhere near making a transfer decision im still worried that if i transferred to an art college i wont like it and then just be filled with twice the regret/waste more money. I also am concerned that if i went to art school that i could always just learn everything they teach me elsewhere, but the downside is that it would take me a million years to do it HA. However if i didnt go to an art college id miss out on a ton of networking.
Also none of my credits will transfer probably (im not taking an art class this semester, hopefully next if I stay)

Id like to hear some transfer student stories if you guys wanna share! Especially students who transferred from a regular school to an art one!!!

Not currently a freshman, but I’m somewhat in the same boat as you.

I doubt there’s an art college there that has a science program… That would be cool though.

It’s really up to you. There’s always the option of learning everything by yourself, going to an atelier or a community college, or an art school. The good thing about going to an art school is the networking. You’re literally surrounded by artists, most of the professors there will be working in the industry so hell yeah for networking. But if you’re in it just to learn something, you should consider ateliers. They’re much more inexpensive. I like to think of them as community college but for art lol. Also, some art schools have transfer agreements with community colleges (like Santa Monica College and CalArts for their character animation program), so it’s not true that none of your credits will transfer. They’ll still consider all of the classes you took, if they’re up to par with one of their similar classes, and see if they’ll give you credit for it. You should try and contact an admissions counselor from the colleges you’re considering.

Also, if you’re worried you won’t like it, there’s really only one way to know: Visit the school. Another that’s not really a surefire way is to research the programs they have for your major. Try asking around for aluminae and talk to them. Talk to a counselor to ask more about their programs. Ask current students if they like it, as well as their opinions.

I’m not yet a transfer student, but will probably will be for the next year. I go to a community college, could have gotten to a really awesome UC with my grades back in high school, but meh. Anyways, the transfer thing also depends on if your school is a four-year or a two-year. I do know that art schools here in California are willing to accept transfer credit for community college students like me, but between universities/colleges, it’ll probably be harder, but you’ll never know until you try.
