i was under the impression that at rolling admissions schools you had 3 weeks from your acceptance to decide if it was before may 1st or you did not have all your info before may 1st. maybe i was wrong. it seems a little illogical for UNM to have me decide before i have financial information, if this info does not come before may 1st?
you’ll have to ask UNM for an extension.
but there is no " 3 week" rule.
The acceptance letter will list the date and it’s usually 5/1. Even when my daughter had rolling admissions last year she still had until 5/1 to make a decision.
just checked with UNM and they said 5/1 is not an absolute deadline, and will accept a deposit after may 1. so there is some wiggle room there. will have to check with YSU.
Edit to say three is no 3 week rule but schools like ursinus have said in their letter that if it is received after 5/1 I have 3 weeks to make a decision, so there are exceptions.
@menloparkmom if your comment was directed at me, I am aware, but I’m letting her know that she does not have to make a decision on Friday and that she has until 5/1/2018 @ 11:59pm to make a decision.
Keep in mind that even if UNM accepts deposits after 5/1, other schools may not. So be mindful of the time. You are cutting it close, but the FA offices at these schools are really good at turning info around quickly. Hopefully you will have all the info you need to make a decision by 5/1. If not, you are going to have to decide whether to hedge a bet…that is put down a deposit at one school knowing that you might lose it if you change your mind and go to UNM.
I emailed ysu to ask if their deadline is strict but if I do not get info before 5/1 I will deposit at ysu and risk losing it. I’m not thrilled about going to college in Ohio if that happens or if unm isn’t affordable but there’s always grad school or other options.

“Keep in mind that even if UNM accepts deposits after 5/1, OTHER schools may not”
^^ this!!
I understand, @menloparkmom . I contacted the only other school I am considering to check and hopefully it all works out.
Point park denied my appeal so I am officially out of luck with them, down to ysu and unm.
You’re handling the deadline issue like a pro. The reality is that, for students who applied late in the game and who’d be candidates for honors colleges, the universities can be a bit flexible when it comes to the deposit date. So thy may agree on 5/4, especially if fa wasn’t ready for May first.
Have you scheduled your visit with YSU KS honors college so that you can attend classes in your major as well as an honors seminar? Do Admissions know you’re coming for a visit?
Hang in there! I wouldn’t expect anything in your FA portal before Weds. at the earliest. Hopefully by Friday, and really, really hopefully by Tuesday, May 1.
Crossing my fingers for you.
both YSU and UNM said may 1 wasnt a hard deadline but id prefer to decide by then. i emailed admissions and asked about an honors visit as i scheduled the visit online and put in that i wanted an honors visit but was not contacted about it.
Here are some tips if you decide on UNM. Please double check everything, in case I’ve made a mistake.
- Meal plans - the only difference between the three freshman meal plans is the number of guest passes and dining dollars. Dining dollars carry over from Fall to Spring, so if you get the middle meal plan in fall and the cheapest one in spring, you'll have a total of $350 in dining dollars to use over the course of the year. (Dining dollars are for places like Subway in the Ucen that don't take swipes.)
- If you're serious about film and you're awarded work study, contact the film department right away about getting a work study job. You'll meet people and learn on-the-job skills that will be valuable later. Same thing if you're sticking with journalism; try to get a work study job that's related to your major / career.
- Register for housing and freshman orientation right away. There's an orientation session in the middle of August, the very last one. Go to that one because you'll do orientation and then just stay for the rest of the year. Your meal plan will be active by then, too.
- Consider the honors floor in Hokona if you want to be surrounded by other Honors students. There's also a Fine Arts Living Learning community in Laguna, but I'm not sure if journalism or film students will be in that one or not.
- The cheapest place to get textbooks, or even extra dorm items (like a mini fridge) is from other students. There's a garage sale type of thing near the end of each semester for this, but I can't remember what it's called. The honors college peer advisors will know because that's where I heard about it.
- Save money on books by buying used ones or by renting them. Compare prices at the local bookstores with places like Amazon, Ebay, Half.com and others. If you buy them (even used), sell them when you're done with them to get some money back.
Nothing to add here other than the willingness of this community to help an anonymous poster and the willingness of said poster to heed some sage advice makes me proud to be a member of this community.
OP I’m glad you came here, listened and acted. I’m anxious to hear how this all plays out for you.
Cheers!
My pell grant and federal loan are in my portal, no institutional aid or scholarships though. Anyone know if it processed separately?
The Amigo comes separately. Pretty sure other stuff does, too. Give it until Thursday, then call. Work study might show up, too. Is the Pell grant roughly what you were expecting?
The Amigo, Pell Grant ($6,095-$3,410) of about $2,685, and student loan might be the only aid UNM might be able to offer as an OOS public school. And work study, but like I said that is earned later, so not available to pay the bill.
Pell more than what I was expecting, but there wasn’t even work study on there. Ill give it a day, as I got an email saying that my federal loans have been processed which makes it sound like there will be more to come.
Each school uses work study differently. I wouldn’t wait to hear. Call and ask.
