My tour guide wasn’t great and gave me almost no info. The honors housing is nice and kids in the honors college seem to be smart and motivated just in a similar situation as me. Had an honors meeting which was good and everyone besides my tour guide was nice. They have a telecommunications media concentration major and id like to double major in that and journalism if I stayed all 4 years but not sure how possible it is. I think its an ok school with a poor tour experience, all the other guides seemed informative. Youngstown didn’t seem like that great of an area but downtown seemed ok.
It’s likely doors & opportunities will fly open for you as a bright motivated student at YSU.
Try not to be discouraged. College is very expensive and many kids don’t get a chance to go, at all! As you mentioned upthread, room & board alone can sink one’s chances.
Everyone, throughout life, has to work with the options in front of them. Hang in there!
We experienced some remarkably bad tours, at a variety of schools. It happens.
I’m sorry you had a bad tour guide. Try not to let that color your overall view of the school, though - a lot of great schools have some bad tour guides, and that doesn’t have to reflect much about the school. I’m glad all the other guides were useful and the honors meeting was good!
You can talk with advisors there as to whether you could double major. Are there any you could contact this spring?
Here’s the link to request more info about the Telecommunication Studies major:
Probably that would lead to them sending you material, but not answering specific questions.
Here are the emails (from YSU’s website under the Telecommunication Studies major) for the acting chair and chair of the Communications department. Since there are both an acting chair and a chair listed, it’s hard to tell which is currently in charge of the department or if they both are, so I would recommend addressing both in one email and saying that you are an admitted student, currently making your decisions as to which college to attend, and you would like to know whether it is possible to double-major in telecommunication studies and journalism and complete those degrees within four years.

Thanks for the update. Youngstown (city) isn’t the best, you’re right, but the area around campus is nice, there are two interesting museums and there are things to do. The campus doesn’t have gothic architecture but it should be well maintained, well organized, and it has new modern buildings. Academically it’s much better than community college or Pitt Bradford.
You can spend two years there and try to transfer to Bellisario or anywhere from there. Or stay 4 very affordable years, use all opportunities, graduate with honors and get a job or go to graduate school.
If you double major, double major in a subject of interest - English, political science, economics, environmental science… It’ll be more employable.
As of now, you’re going to college for sure - something that wasn’t a given a month ago. And you’re going to an honors college AND without breaking the bank. That’s a major accomplishment and one that not only many others would be envious of but also that you can legitimately be very proud of.
@ACollegeHopeful3 I’m sorry if I missed this somewhere in the thread. I’ve been trying to follow along but I’m sure I missed some posts. Have you decided completely against Pitt Bradford? I know it is in an out of the way location, but it seems to at least have your major. I’m not criticizing, just curious.
^ Pitt Bradford didn’t have OP’s major and the courses it did have didn’t prepare for the major at Pitt.
thanks for the comments everyone. i will prob deposit at YSU and hope someone else comes thru with more aid or maybe a spot off the WL after deposit day. if i plan carefully and get good grades i could work on transferring.
Wait till May first. UNM may come through. You have till May First, fingers crossed for the last four days.
@ACollegeHopeful3 - Sorry to read your YSU visit fell a little flat. Perhaps take the weekend and try to think about anything other than college. See some friends, take a walk, bake some cookies, etc… You have been so amazingly focused and determined these last 6 weeks. You deserve a weekend break and time to reflect. What you have accomplished is miraculous!! Self financing a college education is hard, insurmountable for most, and you were able to put this all together in a very small window of time. Whether you end up at YSU or UNM or a school from the NACAC list, you are going to be successful and happy. Furthermore, you are every employers dream - diligent, hard working and savvy enough to seek guidance when you need it. I predict good things in your future!
@Happy4u thank you so much! you’re right, i’m gonna take a break from thinking about it and revisit it monday and truly everyone else on the campus was so amazingly friendly and nice - two girls from the honors college saw i was on a tour and offered me food from a cookout they were having, definitely the most friendly out of any college i’ve seen so far, especially the ones from the northeast.
I agree with @Happy4u a little break will allow you come back with a renewed energy and focus. @ACollegeHopeful3 You really have working hard on your college plans, on top of your current schoolwork, so hey – why no watch Avengers Infinity Wars!! Also, don’t let a ho-hum tour leader/visit affect your decision too much. When I went with my S to ND a couple of summers ago, he actually wanted to ditch the tour early! He still applied (thank goodness) but it was only after he had interacted personally with the current students that he was sold on attending. It sounds like you already got a taste of what the current honors students are like (did you get food from the cookout?) and that’s a better predictor of your future experiences than a one-time tour.
i registered for orientation and am setting up my roommate search at ysu, so in their eyes i am officially a penguin the amigo for UNM came through last night, but they stated i had to accept the scholarship offer by may 1, it would be taken away if i deposited somewhere else, and if i decided to go there after all i would not be eligible for the award again so i’n not even messing with it.
Penguin it is! Congratulations! Well done!
Wow, I’m surprised at the restrictions, especially since they were awarding them into the summer last year.
Have a great time at YSU!
Congratulations, it’s time to celebrate now.
Congrats!! So glad it worked out!
I have been following your journey OP, and your tenacity has paid off. Congratulations, and enjoy your college experience. You will thrive wherever you go!
I have been following your journey as well. You are so amazing. You took everyone suggestions and ran with them. You are definitely going to thrive in whatever college that you go to. Enjoy your journey as you deserve it
