I Might as Well Take a Chance?

I thought that I would never post a chance thread ever again. Then I realized that it was only because I was afraid to hear rejections over and over again. I finally realized while finalizing my first application to be sent off that, in reality all that matters is what the reader for my app thinks. I'm not going to let some fear of rejection by somebody who doesn't choose my college fate for me ruin my curiosity.

Also if you post your thread I will give it a look and chance if I feel like you have a realistic chance thread (none of this Will I get in anywhere crap).
So here it is, with no excuses or vague scores, EC's etc.

Background:
Location: North Carolina
Ethnicity: African American
Gender: Male
School Type: Private, well respected school among top 30. Most students want UNC so don't apply to Ivy's. However the few who have, have been successful.
Major: Will put next to each college

Stats:
GPA: 3.22 UW, 3.50 W ( upward trend in GPA and Numerical Average/Grade)
SAT: 1340/1940 (690 math, 650 critical reading, 600 writing) (taking one more time (expect around 30-50 point rise in all scores with studying. This raise is based off raise made second time.)
ACT:29 Composite (taking one more time and studying (expect 31/32)
APs (sending): Calc AB (4), US History (3), taking 4 more this year (Calc BC, Physics C, World History, Literature)
Courseload: Counselor has told me that I will be marked under most rigorous
No Class Rank or Percentile

Extracurriculars/Volunteer/Work Experience:
1. School Government Position which is elected by School Faculty (12)
2. School Admissions Shadowing Program (12)

9. Appalachian Service Project (9-12)

Also I have over 500 hours of Community Service.

Essays/Recommendations:
Essays: Working hard on them
Teachers Recs: I expect them to be good
Guidance Counselor Rec: Very good Counselor who has mentioned many times how mature I have been in the process and how many times I visit to check on things. Hopefully this will transfer into recommendation

Honors/Awards:
I have a few school based ones but nothing that would really help in admissions.

Colleges:
William and Mary (liberal arts school)
Georgia Tech (School of Computing)
Davidson (liberal arts school)
Elon (liberal arts school)
Purdue (Engineering)
NC State (Engineering as first choice, First year College Second)
UNC Charlotte (engineering)

There is one more school but I don't plan to post it because there are certain hooks that make it a bit of a wild card to chance.

You have a good chance for the privates, don’t know your states well enough to comment. Why not apply to some more Davidson like LACs?

What about Chapel Hill? I think you have a chance for an in-stater.

If your looking at William & Mary, I’d also consider Wake Forest… Aside from the public/private aspect, they are very similar

hmom5- Davidson was the only one that caught my attention. I have been doubting over the last few months if I really want to go to such a small school? Davidson gave me a real homey feel and is on my list because it is a strong school and because of that feeling. However like I said the size just might be too small for me.

FP9- I would probably have a good chance at UNC because of the great relationship that our school has with it. However I have just never felt the hook to it that everyone else seems to have my school.

Scrivener- I ask myself a lot why I never looked at Wake Forest (good friend got in ED and have heard only good things about it). Honestly like UNC I just never felt a calling to look at it based on looking at the website.

Thanks for the post guys. If you want a chance just post your thread and I will take a look.
Thanks for the post guys.

Not a chance thread but I could use a little help narrowing down my list…

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/774446-help-me-get-12-8-a-5.html</a></p>

Virginia fan, while most state schools can not use race as a factor in admissions decisions, private colleges can. That gives you a significant leg up at the privates. There are many that are larger than Davidson.

I will look into that, although my list for the most part is finalized. However I am looking for a reach school that my dad and I are calling the “What the Heck?” school (maybe Carnegie Mellon?). Any private schools that you can think of that are between 5,000-10,000 students that is a decent reach? I am open to anything at this point. BTW I am visiting Boston in October when my dad goes on a business trip so if one is in that area I could easily take a tour.

Again if people didn’t see and if it is an incentive I will chance back if a thread is reasonable and not a “WIll I get In Anywhere !?!?!?!?” thread.

William & Mary is somewhat of a reach OOS for you, and Georgia Tech might be a low reach… for a what the heck school, it would help to know more about your preferences. Location? Popular Majors? Private/Public?

Location can be anywhere. I would like for it to have somewhat of a respected engineering program. Also I would like for it to be private. However engineering is not a requirement.

Again will chance back as long as its a reasonable chance thread. Looking for chances and possibly another school that fits criteria stated in a few of the posts above this one

I think you have a reasonable to good shot at most of your schools! You have a good SAT score, and if you can raise your standardized tests to the level you claim, it will only help you. However, your GPA is low, and your EC’s dont especially stand out but are balanced well. I think you should apply to a couple reaches for the heck of it! good luck.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/775369-chance-me-please-columbia-early-decision.html</a></p>

thanks. I chanced you back.

I hate bumping but I am kind of bored right now.

You have a good chance for all schools. UNC is a moderate reach, and I think William and mary is a reach. Sorry, but i don’t know much about the schools you want to go to. GOOD LUCK!!

Thanks for trying. I think that you are probably thinking of UNC Chapel Hill when you think of UNC which is reasonable.

I think you have a great shot at all of the schools you mentioned except for NC State as I’m not familiar with the school. Your URM status would give you a huge boost. For better chances, maybe get the GPA and SAT up a few notches and I expect you’d be good to go. Going to a top 30 high school will give you a boost though so it might be able to make up for the (slightly) low GPA.

Good luck!

When I say top 30 I mean college rankings top 30. I don’t go a top 30 high school according to official rankings. Also NC State is a high saftey-low match for me so I’m not worried.

Lol! Reading comprehension fail on my part… explains my 680 in my Critical Reading score. :/
