I have $13,000 out of $15,000 for my entire freshman school year. I also need about 1k for books for the year, and I'll spend the rest on supplies for throughout the year. So I was thinking of taking out a $5,000 personal private loan. But the problem is I can't find anywhere to take one out. My parents don't have too great of credit, and I don't have any credit at all. So where would you suggest I go to get a private loan ( one where the cash/check would come straight to me, not the school)?

I asked my financial aid office but they just directed me to student loans( so they'd just go to the school and not to me). But I don't want that. I'd rather have it come to me so I can just give them 2k, then spend the rest on supplies and store in the bank.

Any help would be appreciated!

Wells Fargo has a loan that may be appropriate. We used it on occasion with students. Education loan where money goes to you. Less restrictive on the amount over cost that can be borrowed. Not the best interest rates however. Check out their student loan website. It’s been a while. I’m not sure it’s still there.

Your school will have to certify the amount of your loan, and they will allow you to borrow up to the full COA which includes unbilled items such as books, personal expenses, and transportation. As soon as the billable items are paid (which I’m assuming is $15K), they should refund you the unused balance - usually within a few weeks of classes starting. I would certainly consider taking a Stafford loan if they’re offering you a subsidized loan…it will cost you less and the payment terms are quite favorable.
