I need advice from an alumnis, desperately.

Hi all. I’ll try to make it short. I’m going from OOS~>CCC~> UC. It’s been a bumpy, confusing ride and I unfortunately screwed up one semester. This is my question for UC alumni:

Will one C in a computer science course that doesn’t transfer destroy my chances at UC? I took the course because I thought I would stay at my previous CCC and it was a prerequisite to take a higher course. However I did badly due to medical reasons.

In that semester I also got two Bs, one in Calc 3 another in discrete math. However, I have literally straight As besides those grades. I still have two semesters left at my new CCC (iI had to leave my old CCC because of my father losing his project during my semester at my old CCC and being relocated to San jose.) I also plan on getting straight As again seeing as my family, and medical condition has improved significantly.

I’d say I have good ECs. Mostly honors and research in physics and chaos theory from my university in NY. However I will bump it up this and next semester by joining ptk, and doing more research projects at my CCC.

The UCs I’m applying to are:
UCB-EECS
UCLA-CSE
UCSD-CS or EE (I haven’t decided yet.)
UCD-CSE

Did that one semester ruin everything? Should I even bother applying for Berkeley at this point? Thanks for anybody who responds.

(disclaimer: not an alumnus)

“research in physics and chaos theory from my university in NY” goodness

Consider UCI’s CS program, too. I’ve heard good things.

If the course is non-transferable, then it will not affect you. You should make sure to do well in that higher course, though.

Apply to Berkeley anyway. You have a good shot, especially with your ECs. Talk about this negative time in your personal statement! It seems that it will make your application more appealing. This is especially the case with UCB, as they have a holistic admissions process.

EECS is very competitive, though. Others are better informed than I, but if it doesn’t transfer over, then don’t worry about it. Just try to focus on completing all prerequisites and requirements, and make sure to get a 4.0 this semester.

Hey thanks for the reply. Yeah that C grade class doesn’t transfer to berkeley. I was worried because it is uc transferable.

I always assume the worst in everything. If you don’t you’re never ready for when the worst comes. That’s how I’ve always lived my life. That and also the fact that I keep hearing stories of 4.0 gpas getting rejected over and over.

If the class is “UC Transferable” then it WILL count towards your GPA, it doesn’t matter which UC. Remember, just because the class is not listed on Assist it does not mean that the class is not UC transferable. EECS is a very competitive major but your EC’s definitely help. Make sure you thoroughly write about them in your personal statements.

Ah OK thanks lopapo

Do you know where I could check if the classes are uc transferable? I remember seeing these designations on my syllabus, but is there any website or system I could check it on?

You can check all of the courses that are UC Transferable on Assist. Just enter your CCC and instead of choosing a UC, click on the link that says “UC Transferable Courses”. It will then ask you to select a department such as English, or Physics and it will give you a list of the courses that under that department that are UC transferable. Hope that helps!

Thanks it does greatly.
