Ok, I've heard that it's best to write on topics that interest me. For instance I could talk about an EC I love. Ok here is the problem:

I am interested in math. Do I just rant about how I am attracted toward numbers or something? I understanding how to express interest in and EC by relating with experiences. BUT I don't get how you can show in an essay that you're interested at an acedemic subject... any advice?

Does the rest of your application support that you like math? If you're simply writing about math out of the blue, ... well, I would advise against it because it may make you appear inconsistent. I'm sure you've heard this a zillion times, but colleges look for students that have a "passion." ... so unless the rest of your application backs up your interest in math (i.e. math fairs, math awards, AIME or USAMO... sumac, etc)... yeah.

Going on, assuming that your app does support this-- I would recommend that you spend a few days reflecting why you actually like math, and if there are any experiences that you had related to math that are interesting to write about... I dunno, maybe some story about a math competition, or whatever. Secondly, you should probably also note that you don't have to FOCUS your essay on math; you can simply just mention it once or twice in the essay, and it will be noted by the adcoms as well. Sometimes it is better to write about something ... more personal, and only mention one or two of your academic interests... because colleges are also interested in the way you think.

Finally, make sure that your essay has voice. One good rule of thumb is to read your essay (maybe put it aside for a few days, so you can look at it with fresh eyes) and ask yourself, "Could anybody else have written this essay?" If the answer is yes, your essay most likely will not stand out, and it's back to the drawing board for you. Or, at least, tweak it so that it does stand out. You have to hone that you-ness.

Oh yes, and of course it's good to proofread so adcoms won't think that you're sloppy/careless.

good luck!

thx very much!! anyone else?
