I need help among the Verification process

Recently, I was emailed by DePaul to go through the verification process. I plan on transferring to DePaul in the Fall of 2013.

They said they need my fill out the 2012 Tax documentation for myself and for my parents and also the verification process. They also said it is due in the 4th of April

The issue I currently have is the fact that my parents have not filed the taxes for 2012 yet, but they will in a few weeks in Tax day and whatever.

I really don't know what I am suppose to do.

DePaul doesn't give me an option on the verification sheet where we earned income and plan on giving tax information but we just do not have it yet. There is an option that states that we earned income, but are not required to file taxes. The thing is, we are required to file taxes, I'm not sure who isn't actually.

I called the DePaul Financial Aid in the afternoon and it literally took me 40 minutes to talk to someone and the person was not much of help. She said to check off one of the tax returns for the verification process and then file it later when you do send it, but the DePaul website states that my tax documentation is due on the 4th, so I have no idea what is going on.

All I know is, I'm really losing interest in DePaul and I'm not even sure if I want to go here anymore with how big of a pain in the ass this has been for me in the past couple of days.

What am I honestly suppose to do from here on out?

You have two options:

(1) Send everything that’s required by April 4. Yes, that means your parents will actually need to complete their taxes NOW, instead of waiting another week or two.

(2) Send whatever you can by the 4th, along with a note saying you’ll send the rest as soon as it’s available.

Not sending everything by the 4th might have any of the following effects:

(a) reduce your financial aid award, or
(b) delay your financial aid award, or
(c) have no impact on your financial aid award at all!

I would suggest that you urge your parents to complete their tax returns as soon as possible, and explain to them that even though the IRS doesn’t need the returns until April 15, DePaul needs them sooner. (Some schools were actually asking for tax returns in mid-February, so you’re quite lucky to have a deadline of April 4!)

Just do the best you can, and send as much as you can by the deadline . . . and then hope for the best.

The thing is though is that we have the 2011 taxes, but not the 2012 one, I’m actually not sure why. We have all the information down, I’m just really not sure what we’re suppose to do I guess.

we have the w-2 form though. It is just that we are also required to send a file of our 2012 income tax return, but on the verification process, if I check that off, it states we aren’t required.

Here is the check list that I have to pick from.

My parent(s) completed /updated my FAFSA parent al information with the IRS data retrieval process .

My parent(s) do not qualify to use the FAFSA IRS data retrieval process . If you check this line, you will need to submit a copy of your parent(s)’ 201 2 IRS Federal Tax Return Transcript . A copy of the tax return is NOT acceptable.

My parent(s) are not supplying tax information because my parent(s) had NO earned income for 201 2 .

My parent(s) had earned income but were not required to file a 201 2 income tax return. If you check this box, please submit your parent(s)’ W - 2 forms, and list in the chart below your parent(s)’ employers and all earnings received in 201 2 :

I have no idea which one to pick. It seems like 4 is the most valid, but we are required to do it. I wish the process was more detailed and had more options. Like I said, this whole financial aid thing with DePaul is making me not interested in coming here anymore.

My brother went to DePaul but he filled out his FAFSA like at the last moment in like August, mainly because he was accepted late.

If I were to just completely forget about the FAFSA and ignore all the deadlines, my application will be terminated correct? Would I be able to re-apply or is this my only chance?

If you need financial aid, you have to complete the financial aid application. So, take a breath, relax, and do the best you can.

Of the options offered, the best one to select is probably #2. Your parents can’t use the data retrieval tool (#1) because they haven’t filed their tax returns yet. And both #3 and #4 are false - because your parents did have 2012 income and will be filing a tax return. So, go with #2. And just add a note saying you’ll provide the transcript as soon as it’s available.

Then, like I said, please urge your parents to complete their taxes as soon as possible. Once they’ve filed, it will still take some time before you’re able to get the transcript - so, the sooner they file, the better.

Okay?

My mom planned on filling out the 4th box, but state that we actually are required to do the income tax, but we will file as soon as possible, would that be ok as well?

4 would not be a turthful/accurate answer

2 is the closest.

However, your parents need to get their taxes done TODAY. They can pay on 4/15 (although now would be better), but the information is needed TODAY.

Your freshman year of college is not the time to delay on tax filing. Your FAFSA should have been preliminarily filled out around 1/2 :-).

Good luck.

The OP is a transfer student, not a freshman . . . but when starting at any new school, taxes should be filed as early as possible to facilitate processing of financial aid awards.

Ok, well I received a helpful email from DePaul stating that I should check either #1 or #2 and do whichever when I do file the tax, which is unfortunately not until May or June according to my Parents. They just told me to make a note about it in the verification worksheet. A note stating when I will be able to file the tax.

Thanks for everything guys.
