I need help choosing a college major

I’m currently a freshman in Puerto Rico majoring in forensic psychology. It’s interesting to me and I would love to pursue it, but I’m having my doubts. There are so many other things I’d like to try. One of my biggest dreams is becoming an editor for a newspaper/magazine/book publishing company. But, again, I’m not sure.

The majors I’m considering are:

  1. forensic psychology
  2. english
  3. journalism
  4. sociology
  5. political science
  6. communications

What would you suggest? I’m obviously looking for job availability, earning plenty of money, and not regretting my decision, but I’ve heard that these majors aren’t a great choice since they’re so unappreciated. Unfortunately I’m not fit to study math/science related majors. Also, I’m pretty shy and I’m looking to improve my communication skills as well. Another thing I’d really love is either a job at an office or a job in which I can travel the world. Thanks in advance!

What does “plenty of money” mean to you? You can earn plenty of money with any of these majors since that is more dependent on the kind of job you do than the major you select. You can major in sociology and then go work on Wall Street as a consultant and make decent money, for example. You could also major in any of these things and travel the world. The major doesn’t dictate what you do in your job; the job does. So focus on picking something interesting and then building in internship, job, and learning experiences that build towards the kind of career you want.

The other thing is that most people are interested in lots of things; but at some point you do have to pick one, even if it’s more or less arbitrary. Case in point: I love history and happily read a lot of historical nonfiction and even have a favorite historical time period, but I majored in psychology. I like them both, but I picked one, and I took classes in the other one and read a lot and enjoy it in other ways. Same with you - you have to pick one, and then the rest you can take some classes in or read about or enjoy otherwise.

Newspaper and magazine editors are usually writers first, so English or journalism seems obvious - but you could also be a writer for either with a major in anything on your list. Any of these majors can lead to jobs working in offices (I was a psych major and I currently work in an office).

I think if forensic psychology is already interesting to you and you’d love to pursue it - in your own words - then you should just stick with it!
