I am planning on auditioning for the BFA program at the University of Minnesota, but of course I need others to audition to. I’m not strictly looking for a BFA program, a BA would be fine, I suppose. I have a preference for a BFA though. I’m looking for something that would give me a focus on acting but also give me opportunities for technical production or other aspects of theatre. Like sound and light design, writing, management, etc. Not all of them of course, but it has to at least allow me to have a focus on acting and do technical stuff. I know some schools have BFA programs that allow that, and I was just wondering if you guys knew any.
Check out the New School for Drama. When are you applying – for this year? Minnesota Guthrie BFA is EXTREMELY competitive so make sure you have lots of other options.
Look at University of Evansville. It’s a bit less selective, but a strong BFA program and typcially offers good scholarships. Also, the Theater Studies BFA at Depaul. It’s very competive, but offers a lot of what you’re talking about.
If you are into contemporary/ensemble work, the Boston Conservatory BFA in Contemporary Theater offers everything you just pointed out. Strong emphasis on acting. A full year of stagecraft. A lot of opportunity to work in student-produced works.
And I second New School. My D had a lot of the same interests as you and that was on her list, also.
Definitely look at Syracuse. I think at Rutgers it is possible but the BFA acting program is so intense and time consuming it is more difficult to do.
