I Need Help Deciding on a Major/Minor

Hello! I’m a current high school senior that has recently been accepted to Penn State University Park for summer and fall of 2015. I’m still waiting to hear back from Pitt (undecided engineering) and U Rochester (audio and music engineering), however I will most likely be going to PSU. Anyway, about two months after I applied undecided they announced their new Music Technology major starting fall of 2015. For me I thought this was perfect, as I am an active musician that is caught between majoring in some sort of science or technology or music. My question is this: Should I take the risk in a new major that I find interesting and minor in something practical or should I major in something practical and minor in music technology? My biggest problem with this has always been disinterest in most other majors so I don’t know how much I will be able to involve myself in a more practical major. Any insight on the new major and my whole situation in general would be very much appreciated

A better option than soliciting opinion here is to approach the faculty in the department that is offering this major and talk about your interests and how they overlap with the objectives dept. offering the new major. Check the classes that are required and the kinds of positions that they are preparing students for. You could also do a double major if it suited your needs better. At most schools, you don’t commit until the start of junior year which gives you plenty of time to take a range of classes. Most students change their majors and many do it several times so you don’t have to be in a hurry to commit to anything.

I know I’ve be done as much research on it as I could, looking at the classes etc, I was just looking for an outside opinion because I assumed Penn State would want to try and sell their new program that they’re building up. I’m aware I have plenty of time before I commit, I just like to plan ahead
