Can someone explain why the following sentence is wrong?

"Interest to revive the ancient Olympic Games as an international event grew when the ruins of the ancient city of Olympia wee uncovered by German archaeologists in the mid-nineteenth century."

WHich of the following is incorrect?
A. to revive
B.as
C.when
D.were uncovered
E.no error

My guess is A is incorrect, as it should be “in reviving” instead. I think it’s simply idiom; the only real explanation for this is that that’s just the way English is.

B is correct, C is correct (“when” is referring to a specific event of the uncovering of Olympia), D is correct (it’s “were” and not “was” because “ruins” is plural).

I would agree. I had the same thought.
