I am a HS senior who wants to go W&M. Because my stats are not spectacular I feel I have a very bad chance at being accepted.

My HS stats are as follows
GPA: 3.7
SAT I: 1340
SAT II: 590 Writing 660 Math IC 740 US History
Rank: 95/400
AP's: 4 European History

I am wondering whether or not I should attend Richard Bland, a two year college. If I go to Richard Bland and I maintain a GPA of 3.0 I have a 100% chance of being allowed to transfer into William and Mary

I need to know how important it is that I attend a prestigious school when after I graduate. I want to go to a good law school after college, how important is prestige in that case? I also want to know whether it is going to be worth it to miss out on the college experience just so I can go to a better college. Otherwise I will probably end up going to either James Madison U or American U (both of which are great colleges, but not my #1 choice).

I don't think you have a very realistic view. I don't know what your chances are for William and Mary, but I doubt they are a bleak as "very bad."

I am not sure I understand your question about prestige.

Unless you're trying to save money, why not attend JMU or American for the first year or two and plan to transfer from there? Is it the "guarantee" that attracts you to a 2-yr school? Perhaps you should inquire at W & M about how tough it is to transfer in from a traditional 4-year school. I suspect you could do well enough to be admitted after a year or two. This way you wouldn't miss out on the residential college experience.

I was already deferred ED. If they weren't going to accept me then I doubt they wull do it now. I like your idea, though, I can just go to one of those colleges and transfer if I don't like it and stay if I do. So simple, I wonder why I didn't think of that...

Be sure to send an update letter if your senior year is going well, telling them about any significant achievements you've made as well . . . and maybe you can have your guidance counselor call them and see if he/she can find why you were deferred . . . btw, you (not a parent on your behalf) should call too, just to show your strong interest

Sohrab, getting a 3.0 + GPA is not guaranteeing u admission until and unless there is some guranteed admission to W & M program. So think about it...

Sohrab - not sure you should assume that deferral ED means rejection RD. I am hearing more and more that a good number of ED deferrals are turning into RD acceptances. Particulary a good idea to follow 546 mp's suggestions - could enhance your chances. (There are other parents far more knowledgeable than I on these matters, perhaps they will post, but I think I'm correct in these suggestions).
