i really want to be lawyer and go into a law grad school i dont know what major i would have to have to get into a good law grad school and what courses are required. i would really like to go to duke or harvard as my grad school but i dont know what to have as my major in undergrad school.
Most pre-law students major in something that goes along the lines of law or policy, anything in the humanities/social studies realm really. A couple of options are:
-Political Science (very popular)
-History
-Criminal Justice
-Economics
-Psychology
-Sociology
Some schools (AU, for example) have undergrad majors such as Legal Studies, that are basically designed for pre-law students. Here’s a resource that might help:

A friend went to Harvard Law as a history major from a small LAC ranked outside the top 100
I work at a law firm. Most of our attorneys majored in English. One was a bio major.
I’ve heard a lot of music majors get into law school… don’t know how true this is, but I do know someone with a music degree from UOP who got into Yale law school. It happens.
I’m a lawyer. I would recommend not choosing “pre-law,” because you will have enough law classes in law school. People come to law school with all kinds of majors undergrad, so pick something you are interested in. I double majored in political science and English, but I know lawyers who majored in anything from finance to biology to engineering. Also, don’t sweat it if you don’t get into Harvard or Duke. Here in NJ most lawyers went to Rutgers or Seton Hall and have successful careers. I worked with one associate who had two Ivy league degrees who fell asleep at his desk. Who you are is much more important than where you go.
You can also think about what type of law do you want to do in the future:
Do you want to go into politics? Political Science
Do you want to help the underprivilieged? Maybe sociology or psychology
Do you want to be a Patent Attorney? Engineering
Do you want to be a Corporate Attorney? Maybe finance or economics
No idea? Maybe English as you will be writing, or History
Or just anything you want.
Duke Law says:
What should I major in?
There is no one major that is appropriate or favored as preparation for law school. It’s not surprising that many people who are interested in attending law school are also attracted to majors such as political science, history, and economics, and we do see (and admit) many people who have studied these fields. However, the intellectual atmosphere at the Law School is enhanced by the presence of students from a wide range of majors from humanities to the sciences. We look favorably on applicants who have taken a wide-ranging, challenging curriculum and developed skills in writing, close textual analysis, and critical thinking. Rather than select a major because it is “good preparation for law school,” you should make your choice because the discipline seems interesting and engaging to you. You will be most engaged in these classes, and do your best work there - which will probably turn out to be the best preparation for law school.
Harvard says:
What is the best “pre-law” curriculum? How does one prepare for law school?
Harvard Law School considers applications from all undergraduate majors. There are no fixed requirements with respect to the content of pre-legal education. The nature of a candidate’s college work, as well as the quality of academic performance, are reviewed in the selection process. However, in preparing for law school, a broad college education is usually preferable to one that is narrowly specialized. The Admissions Committee looks for a showing of thorough learning in a field of your choice, such as history, economics, government, philosophy, mathematics, science, literature or the classics (and many others), rather than a concentration in courses given primarily as vocational training.
So what are your favorite courses in High School?
