hmmm. You are somewhat similar to me. Bad ECs, but you have a lot more hours than me. I only have around 200 hours combined. Maybe if you write a good essay, you will have a chance at the lower Ivies.

You are in at all UCs and USC. Your SATs are ok, but not so good. UCs don't care so much though. 4.4 + 2200 is good enough for any UC.

Dude, PLEASE also look at some other non name brand schools okay? Burn that list of rankings you probably sleep with. =P

Okay, you're probably in at the UC's and USC. Match for JHU, and reaching for all the Ivies.

BUMP.
any more replies would be helpful! =]

how are his sat's only ok? no ivy is going to reject you because you ONLY got a 2310. That's a good score

oh hey guys!
my cousin is wondering about his stats as well
so if u can give any input on his, it would be much appreciated!
thanks.

so he is wondering, what else can he do to make himself competitive and make his extracurriculars stand out?
He wants to get into:
UCLA
UCB
JHU
STANFORD
HARVARD
YALE
COLUMBIA
and he's also wondering, what schools would be good for him if he's going to major in law/medicine? He's thinking of majoring in psychology.

Look, both you and your cousin have great grades and test scores, but your ECs are nothing but volunteering time at a library and club--and basically show no leadership or academic competitions at all, and with the exception of the recital and spread the peace competition, your cousin's ECs are the same.

With these as the only things on your resume, just write off all the Ivies and Stanford. UC Berkeley and UCLA rely much less on the ECs so you have much better chances there--and you both are probable matches at those schools if you live in California.

As indicated above, the key to the other schools is to show that you do something and care about something besides going to school and doing your homework. What's your passion? What are you doing to make the world a better place? If school didn't exist, what would you be doing with your time--and what are you going to do with your life--in other words, why should Harvard, Yale, Columbia, etc.--admit you to their prestigious institutions?

^What he said. And I'll reiterate what I said, please look at some other schools. I know you've probably only heard of the ones you listed, but believe it or not there are other schools out there. Many Asians not living in the States and first gen ones make the mistake of only applying to the ones they've heard of. And those inevitably are Ivy Leagues and whatnot. You're just a small fish in a big pond right now, there's so much you haven't heard of. I know when I applied to UVa, people were like *** is that? But it's actually pretty well known in the States. Don't blind yourself before your future even starts alright? If my advice goes in one ear and out the other, prepare yourself for heartbreak. =S

Lol. Most normal people do not have "passions" like helping others. My passion is sitting on my butt and watching adult videos or playing games, but I have to pretend I like to volunteer instead for colleges.

Strong chances to both you and your cousin. Don't count on getting into the Ivies, although you may get in. They are reaches, but you are definitely in USC and UCS.

iloveapush/iloveapush's cousin:

Assuming you are California residents,
UCB/UCLA: Safe Match
UCSD: Safety
UCI/UCSB/UCD: Safety
UCSC/UCR/UCM: Super Safety

hmm well thanks for the replies.
i knew my ecs are pretty weak, but i thought my cousin's was pretty strong?
hes founder/president of JSA
hes a journalist for school newspaper
he's on the schools academic decathlon team for USAD
and he's on his city youth committee
so he's wondering waht else can he do to make his extracurriculars stand out?
as for me, i am planning on entering the medical field
therefore as of now, i have started working at a health clinic
is this a good hook? i feel that my passion is to help others around me.
so any suggestions on any leadership that i can get?
also for my cousin, what more can he do to make himself stand out?
thanks a lot for the replies.
i truly appreciate it.

Last time I checked, Cal and UCLA were UCs too.
And you're not really first generation--1.5 generation, if anything.

bump
any more replies would be much appreciated! =]

"also for my cousin, what more can he do to make himself stand out?"

Apply to colleges that everyone in California does not apply to. Bowdoin, Carleton, Rice, Emory, U Chicago, Case, Vanderbilt, Northwestern.
