I need help understanding the transfer process.

I just graduated from high school this year. I was enrolled at UC Berkeley, but unfortunately, the costs to go there are too high for my family, so I recently decided to drop out and just go to community college and then transfer.

I need help understanding the transferring process. So far, these are the units I have:
From AP Exams:
European History: 8 units
Psychology: 4 units
U.S. Government and Politics: 4 units

From classes I took in 11th grade at a city college:
Elementary Statistics: 3 units
Elementary Spanish: 5 units
... I got a B in both of these classes.

= 24 units

If all these credits count, then I'm assuming I need 36 more units to make 60, which is the minimum number of units required for me to transfer into a UC...

Ugh!! I'm so confused. Say I want to major in English... at UCI (not sure if I want to go to Berkeley anymore because of I don't want to deal with the Seven-Course Breadth requirement if I already finished my GEs)... would I have to finish all my general education classes and pre-reqs (lower division classes?) before I am able to transfer?

Also, if I apply for the Fall 2012 semester, then would I apply during the Fall 2011 application period, when they would only see my grades from my first year and the two classes I took in 11th grade?

I apologize in advance that my thread is a mess, but I am just very confused. Thank you so much for your insight and advice, I really appreciate it.

im just going to answer these as an excuse to not study for my midterm…

yes you would have to finish all your GE requirements in addition to fulfilling the major prep requirements for your english major which can be found on assist.org (look under UCI and your cc)

in regards to finishing your pre reqs, i think uci is a little more lenient with them as in you can finish them in spring prior to transferring (maybe even summer) if applying to UCI, i strongly suggest you check the little “TAG (Transfer Agreement Guarantee)” box in your UC ap which you will see when selecting which UC’s you will be applying to come fall, basically just maintain a 3.5+ gpa and you’re guaranteed admission

if you plan on being at UCI during fall of 2012, then yes, you would apply during the fall 2011 application period. yes, they would only see your grades from your first year, your eleventh grade which you took those 2 classes, and any subsequent winter/summer sessions you took (which i recommend you take). however, they will ask for your work in progress in january, and when you get your grades you’re going to have to report it to them which will heavily factor into their decision.

ADVICE:
I encourage you to not do the minimum 60 units, but go for at least 70. it will only benefit you to transfer as many units to UCI as you can which means you wont have to take as many classes there to meet the graduation deadline (classes at cc are cheaper than at UCs so you’ll save money). however, if you choose to only do the minimum 60 that’s fine, you can take your last spring semester off without consequence (assuming you’ve completed the minimum 60 by then, you can just tell UCI that in your update ap, that’s what i did for UCLA).

good luck

Thank you so much, Andrizzle!!! That cleared up a lot for me, especially about the update applications.
So it wouldn’t be a good idea if I tried to transfer after one year? Because then they would see my 3.0 gpa… but, I really wouldn’t mind working my butt off for the next year during the fall, spring, and summer semesters to finish my 36 (or 46, to get 70) units.

And I wish you good luck on your upcoming midterm!! :]

yes, they care about you more than you think, at least in my case

@bagelsbagels: I don’t know what happened to our posts >__< I tried to edit it and then they were gone…

yea… its kind of like life… things come and go and you dont have as much control as you think you do

True, true.

you’re very welcome [:

it’s not necessarily a bad idea to transfer after only one year, since you can most likely get into UCI as an English major with a 3.0 w/ a TAG agreement signed. my friend actually transferred to UCI after only one year as an Econ major, but he switched to criminology when he got there. to my knowledge, english isn’t impacted. your gpa also resets when you transfer, so you’ll start off with a blank slate.

however, if you decide to stay 2 years at cc you can raise your 3.0 and it’ll look better if you decide to apply to grad school because grad school looks at both your cc gpa (which is right now, according to you, a 3.0) and your uc gpa. there’s more benefits to staying at cc for 2 years that i can’t recall at this moment.

also if you decide to transfer after in one year, you’ll be considered a jr when you get there next year, and if you graduate within the next year after transferring you’ll be saving money (i think?)

it’s at your discretion really.

Ohhh, I see. Thank you very much!! I’ll definitely keep all this in mind. I didn’t know we start off at a blank state when we transfer… does that mean when I graduate from a UC, only my UC GPA is counted for whatever it’s used for in graduating purposes? Whoaaa.
