So maybe your tuition and fees can be covered with the Miami Access Initiative, and then Pell, OCOG, and student loan can pay for room and board.
Actually yes @mommdc - Ohio students can get certain Ohio grants for college too. No way to know how much without the financial aid award letter though. But she can’t use Pell to do R&B if she gets the Access Initiative: “we combine an Access Fellow’s federal and state grant funds with University grant and/or scholarship funds to meet the cost of tuition and academic fees.” - she’s already got that form merit anyway, her award is $13k and tuition is $14-something.
And I didn’t know about this, that’s great @Synful122 - http://miamioh.edu/about-miami/tuition-promise/
Being an hour away would keep your travel costs down for sure. You can buy used books, or rent to lower those costs. IDK what their room and board assumes in terms of plans but you may be able to save money there.
Seems like you may have a solid option there…let us know what the official award letter says when it comes?

this page gives an idea on awards by type of school (numbers for 2016/17)
Yes, please let us know what your award from Miami U says.
@OHMomof2 @mommdc I just got awarded a $50k scholarship to University of Dayton. That includes my federal grants and stuff, but none of the loans.The $50k consists of just straight scholarships/grants. From room and board that leaves like $4,700/yr to pay for and I get a county scholarship that $1k/yr so that’s down to $3,700 then I can work to pay off some of it while in school or just take a subsidized federal loan correct? This scholarship they gave me is AMAZINGGGG.
I could also look into outside scholarships to pay for some of it too.
That’s great! Just wait for all your decisions to come in and look carefully at all the billed costs and free aid that you are offered at each school, maybe visit some of the top choices, you have until May 1 to decide.
Great results!
WOWOW!!! Congratulations! That’s awesome It’s a really good university.
You understand, it means that you ARE GOING TO COLLEGE! (I know you were a bit anxious about at what cost you’d be able to go.)
And now, you can wait and see: I bet it won’t be the only good offer.
Are you sure that UD $50K is per year and not over 4 years?

^ good question.
@“Erin’s Dad” yes I would post picture if I can. It’s total package is $215k
@Synful122, Can you type out the award for us and post it here?
Tuition =
Room and Board =
Fees or other direct costs =
Pell grant =
School scholarship/grants =
Loans =
@austinmshauri
Tuition= $41,750
Room and Board= $13,180
Fees or other direct costs= $4,000 (books over four years estimate)
Pell Grant= I’m not sure they gave me $9,752 in federal grants and stuff I’m sure the pell is in there.
School scholarship/grants= $40,420/yr in merit (This rises as tuition and room and board rises, so my fees will be the same all four years)
Loans= 0
This leaves me with BILLABLE costs at $4,758/yr. However, I get a guarnteed county scholarship for $1,000/yr and I just became a finalist for this other full ride to UD and the finalist are guarnteed at least $5,000/yr in scholarships so that would cover EVERYTHING. The books are covered because I did a campus visit which means you get $500 a semester for the book store. And I get a guarnteed $3,000 study abroad scholarship, but if I do the study abroad their UD it’s “free”, it’s just the same amount as I would pay to take classes and live at UD for a semester, so they just transfer it to my study abroad.
That’s excellent! Congratulations.
That’s terrific.
Where else have you applied and are still waiting to hear from?
You have till May 1st, but you don’t get something affordable in the upcoming month,
take the offer and don’t look back. This is truly awesome - they must really want you.
If you get similar offers from other schools, you’ll have the luxury problem of choosing
between different full rides, which is a very good problem to have.
Congrats! Be sure to check requirements for getting you merit awards renewed and be sure they are for ALL 4 years. Some students lose scholarships if they don’t meet academic and progress toward degree requirements.
It’s so nice to see someone apply smartly for their situation and get enough aid to actually let them go! Congrats!
Congratulations!! Nice to have a great offer in hand.
@HImom The requirement is a 3.0 GPA during all 4 years. So seeing as I’m an aspiring doctor that should be withheld for me if I plan on actually doing what I’m supposed to be doing.
Just FYI, it’s good to check with the U as to the % of kids who keep their merit awards all 4 years vs those who lose them due to low grades. Grades in college are often be quite different from HS.
You may also want to see if the U offers academic probation if you have a bad term and if the GPA requirement is cumulative so strong terms can help offset a bad term or two. What folks intend to pursue in college and what they finally end up getting a degree in can be VERY different.
