... and I got deferred. How do i let them know that in the most sincere yet most undesperate way possible........... PLEASE, any advice.

wht are ur stats/essays - ill tell u if its worth it

dude... there are plenty of other good schools out there. you should never feel like you NEED one particular institution.

but yeah, post your stats

What do you mean "otherwise I'm not going to college"? Have you not applied anywhere RD?

With an Ivy, that is the most foolhardy thing I can think of! If you look around on CC, Dave Barry posted an article about how to increase your chances of admission once you've been waitlisted/deferred. I hope for your sake that you'll be accepted...but if you end up waitlisted, find out who on the adcoms is in charge of your region, get their email and let them know how sincere your desire to attend is, and that you WILL attend. (I wouldn't tell them you didn't apply anywhere else cuz they'll jsut think you're a flaming idiot). <- You can prolly do this now, just so they have you in mind when they start making RD decisions.

Good luck! :)

you can't get waitlisted after deferred - its in or out.
im writing them a letter, though i dont want to sound too desperate.

i don't think my stats are relevent - im just asking for ways to get in after deferral.
and i know i shouldnt put all my eggs in one basket, but i just dont seem to "like" and other colleges. i love penn, and everywhere else (my 2nd, 3rd, 4th... schools) are all EHHHH.... you know?

Are you sure? Oh well, I stand corrected. :) Either way, the gist of what I'm saying is: contact them, be proactive, let them know you're incredibly keen on Penn, keep them updated with any honors you get for academics and ECs and email the person in charge of your region specifically, not just the general admissions office so your notifications don't fall through the cracks. Your regional person won't speak up on your behalf if they don't know how serious you are.

I understand if you don't want to post your stats but I can't imagine how they wouldn't be relevant for college admission. lolz..whatever, did you at least apply to any other colleges or were you just been an online drama queen when you said "otherwise no college"?

Good luck! :)

thanks for your help cordeliah,
yes i was a bit dramatic, I have a few backups! :)
althought they're not as good as penn (nyu, umich, cornell) in my eyes
I will try to keep in touch. Im in the middle of writing a letter. do you think i should call, too? i don't want to be annoying. Would you mind to read my letter if i pm it to u?

wait, do u go to penn? or are u a senior whose applying? i just got the impression u were older and past the college admissions!

if you didn't get into Penn, i would hesitate to call NYU, Michigan, and Cornell your backups.

do you not want to post your stats or something? b/c we could give you advice from there on how to improve your app between now and decisions.

Your 2nd, 3rd, 4th schools aren't "EHHHH" at all! I understand why someone might like Penn better than any of them (and I might even agree with someone), but I could also make a perfectly honest argument that any of them is as good as or better than Penn. Each of them has a lot of special qualities, and if you wind up at one of them there will be a lot to love. And in terms of pure educational opportunities, whatever differences there are shouldn't even matter to a single undergraduate, who couldn't begin to exhaust what any of them offers.

Don't fall into the trap of being in love with one college and thinking that the others are crap. Penn may be 95% perfect for you, but if that's the case than none of Michigan, Cornell, or NYU should be much less than 90% perfect (and probably better than that).

Ya you have a few days before deadlines for applications close to a bunch of places. I'd suggest applying non-stop to a few schools because you don't want to be left high and dry if you don't get in after deferral. The unfortunate truth is if you get deferred that means there was something about your application that rubbed the adcom the wrong way, so don't think you'll have as good of a shot as you did in ED.

Haha I'm a senior applying to Penn now..guess I'm just super mature sounding :P Plus, my mom used to be a professor/ occasional adcoms reader (not at Penn though) so I know a few tips.

PM me your letter and I'll give you feedback on the tone; there's a fine line between sounding confident and professional and brownnosing. If it were me, I would email because you are more in control of the situation and can plan what you're going to say whereas in a phone call, you can be unprepared and sound flustered if you're nervous. Also, they can refer to your emails when making decisions. Phone calls can be more personal though..its up to you.

The general rule is to only email them every 2 or so weeks, starting now, and only when you have newsworthy academic/EC stuff to let them know. Anything that helps you stand out as a real person is to your advantage but trivial stuff like "Hey Penn adcoms, guess what? I got an A on my AP Macro pop quiz!" isn't in your favor lol.

Good luck!

i'm actually not sure that deferral means no waitlisting

back in the day, i was deferred ea from mit, then waitlisted there

btw, I applied to M&T.

SAT: math-750, writing 800, reading 690
sat ii: math 780, bio 670, ushist-630
aps: apus-5, apeuro-4,apenglish-4, 3 more aps this year
gpa: ~4.0, top5%

honestly your stats are not very high...so maybe you should grab a few more backup schools before the deadline..

Lesson here is: only apply to schools you would attend without question or hesitation. If you have Penn as your only choice, and then a handful of schools that don't excite you as your fall-back, then you should really add a few more RD schools like TODAY and just blast the Common App to them so you at least have some higher list of possibles if/when Penn says No again.

Would it be okay to contact your regional rep just to let them know that your interest has not died after a deferral, even if you have nothing really significant to add?

This question is referring more to Yale since that's where I applied early, but I was wondering what you guys think...

this is the problem

not getting into the school you want to get in isn't the end of the road... you never know - maybe you'll really like your 2nd, 3rd, or 4th-choice schools if you go to any of them. ;)

But I digress! I agree with what cordeliah says... keep Penn updated on any other awards or things that will make you stand out, and that will keep pushing your app to the top of their pile. Good luck!

do some schools that don't have essays that can be done in minutes like Washu, Boston college, case western...maybe ur state schools??

u can write a letter expressing ur sincere passion for Penn.....maybe they will look at ur file again..i know a person who wrote a letter and later got in when adcom looked at him file again
