So for those of us who are deferred...

Okay, so what can we do now to increase our chances?
Send in additional rec? Any suggestions?
Gah, Penn's still my top choice... too bad i was deferred....

oh yeah, do defers get their own separate pool or are they just combined with regular applicants?

I think schools disapprove of you sending in extra info. however i may be wrong.. I'm pulling my app anyways. meh..

Why would you pull it? You still have a chance! (and you already paid so there's nothing to lose)

Michigan offered me a half to full scholarship and LSA honors, and they "unofficially" pegged me as an ross preadmit. So with that whole package, I think that Ross might actually be a better fit than wharton......So therfore, I'm pulling my app... but I'm also doing it partly out of anger ...ARGGGGGGGGGGGGG...like they care......

Hey guys so I'm in the class of 2012, last year I was waitlisted from RD and eventually got in. I definitely think its a good idea to stay in contact with the admissions office. Call them, send a letter reaffirming why you want to go to Penn. You are in a position where you have an advantage over RD kids you can show them how much you like Penn beyond your essay continued passion will go over the right way. One admissions officer i talked to last year after Rd decisions told me how surprising it is that kids say they are interested in Penn but never make a further attempt to try and get in. Even though its extra work on a school that you are probably not too happy with right now if you really want to go to penn its imperative to show them that. Good luck and remember if you were deferred you are good enough just politics and spaces keep many of the truly talented students from the schools they deserve.

Penn is still my first choice too. Is there any chance I can get some information on why my application was deferred? I don't want to make it seem like I'm complaining, I just really want to know if it's something I can fix. I applied to Wharton, so I'm wondering if it was just my test scores. My SAT math didn't break 700. I'm not sure if e-mailing them is the best way to go. I'm sure they're probably receiving lots of questions like this.

I was thinking about sending another teacher rec and maybe an additional essay. Good or bad?

to everyone:
Penn Alumni: Alumni Council on Admissions

dont give up hope! prove to them that you still love penn. workinprogress, i am also planning to send them another teacher rec and a letter telling them about recent achievements, some qualifications i didnt add on my app, etc.

workinprogress --> I don't think the AdComs will be able to place a SINGLE thing as the reason you were deferred. They always stress that it is the combination of several things that yields an admit/defer/reject, so I doubt you'll get anywhere with that. There is no harm in trying though, as it might show them you are still very interested. Good Luck!

Yes, it matters if you stay in touch. I've heard it from the horse's mouth. No, they will not give you any specific reason why you were rejected...it's not looking for reasons to reject you, it's looking for reasons to accept you, and if deferred then there is something more they want to see from you.

Best of luck

Penn's admissions office defers you for one of three reasons:

We want one last proof of your academic excellence. Your first semester senior grades. They don't have to be all As. They just have to be good.

If you listed taking an SAT.SAT II in the future, we want that score.

We are pooling you with the general apps because we want to compare you to the students who apply during regular decision.

Penn maintains that your interest has already been demonstrated via your early decision application and your "Why Penn?" essay. Additional materials will NOT help us make any better decisions.

The only essay material considered is your essays from ED. Beyond that, any additional material considered is only material that your school sends. This includes recommendations, transcripts, etc.

This ensures a few things:
1. Your ED essays are your final essays. No revised drafts/changes or more "Why Penn?" interest essays are submitted.
2. Peer influence from students who were accepted ED is not present in your essays.
3. Our biases towards your essays don't change over time.
4. If you have been deferred, you don't gain an advantage over RD applications by sending in additional essays. We want to compare you on equal grounds.

Best of luck.
Source? My best friend's mom works at Penn UA.

why, thank you all!
i guess i should update my application and send a letter or something (would email be okay?)
again, thanks for help everyone!

I'm definitely going to send in stuff. It's still my childhood dream to go study in Philadelphia at Penn, so I'm not going to give up hope.

My grades (4.7 W at a very competitive high school, top 4%) are impeccable, and test scores are good (2260, 33), so I think my deferral decision came down to my ECs. I have stellar ECs (varsity water polo, Scouts, biochem research internship, legit corporate work experience, internships with multiple charities), but I think I failed to connect all of my ECs to my passion for business and how Wharton would benefit me. I keyed in on my compassion and eruditeness, but I failed in my app to throughly explain why Wharton and how Wharton would help me.

I want to become a social entrepreneur of some sort, so I explained that and affirmed my hope of attending Wharton in a thoughtful, succinct page and a paragraph letter (with my business letterhead). I'm also going to attach a resume to explain how my ECs show my passion of social entrepreneurism, and two more letter of recs.

I'm not interested in sending more essays (I don't think thats fair or will help). But to lauke, if I feel I know why/where my application is lacking (didn't tie all of my ECs together to how Wharton will help me), will a letter explaining that help?

I really do think I'm qualified to get into Wharton, and the deferral just signifies my app was just missing something. Since I doubt it's my grades, I figure my mid-year report won't make that much of a difference, and clarifying my ECs and my reasons for wanting to do business will.

On a positive note, two people from my school applied to Wharton: one got deferred (me), and the other outright rejected (although I am way more qualified that she is). Looking at the profile of people who got in, I think I am qualified to go to Wharton, and hope a clarification of things will help me get in. =]

If not, I've learned a lot from my Penn app, and I'll go to another good school (Virginia, Swarthmore, NYU Stern, perhaps Stanford). Congrats to everyone who got in, I hope I'll (and I think I can) join you at Penn.

Soo...does this mean that those of us who didn't keep in contact should expect rejection...
Are we put at a disadvantage?
