so help a mom out, please. Seems he wants my 17 year old in his studio, and need advice. Please give likes so I can get my points, and/or PM me please about UMKC. Thanks!
I can’t comment on the teacher. I know when my D was looking at teachers, she checked with her current teacher and reached out to students she knew at the school to ask about the teacher’s reputation. If she didn’t have a contact at the school she did reach out to the music school administration to see if there was a student “ambassador” to speak (text) with about the school and teachers (of course they will be positive but students often have an opinion and you can catch comments like … oh he works with this type of student a lot … or everybody loves him…or he works a lot with new students or mainly with older students…he’s here part-time etc). My D did talk by email with one teacher and brought up the possibility of studying with another teacher for full disclosure. The first teacher told her that the other potential teacher was gone a lot and then provided a list of students my D could contact for references. My D then googled the other teacher and found out, indeed, that teacher had a heavy performance schedule in the upcoming year so she dropped that idea as she wanted a teacher that would be available. The other teacher promised that. Of course visiting him or doing a skype lesson would be best if not done already. I hope these random thoughts help in some way.
And full disclosure: my D went to UG with little thought about the teacher…lol…besides checking with her current teacher and talking with a kid she knew at the school that said…yea she’s great! Most of the comments are from grad school selection.
