I need serious advice from parents: Princeton admissions

Hi,

I find you CC parents very knowlegable people, and I wanted to ask you guys an important question.

I am graduating with only 3 years of high school, even though I have more credits than the average 4 year graduate. I am planning to apply to princeton and I know that they dont consider freshman grades for gpa. Since I am graduating in 3 years, will this also apply to me? Thanks.

I don't know if they consider freshman grades. My S considered applying and was encouraged, but he had APs and college classes. A friend of his applied and was admitted, but also had plenty of APs and college classes. You should ask the admissions office. Also ask about recs.

Yes, I also have alot of AP and CC classes as well. I wanted to take a gap year and work on a major community project. I sent an email to the admissions office but they havent responded and it been 2 weeks. I'll email them again.

They said that they only consider the last 2 years of high high school, regardless of if i graduate in 3 or four years. I guess that means they'll only consider my junior and senior year.

Alien:

It does not mean that the APs and/or college classes you may have taken in 9th grade (or even earlier) will not be considered. The idea is that 9th grade is a year of transition, so colleges discount 9th grade grades for the benefit of students, not to their detriment. If you have APs and college classes from 9th grade or before, you should certainly list them, if not on the regular form, at least on a resume or supplemental section.

I kinda feel lucky becaue including my frshman and sophomore year, my gpa would be 3.7 uw and around 4.4 weighted. Since they will consider my junior and senior years (they told be specifically), my gpa will hopefully be 3.9uw and 5.1 weighted if things go as usual.

Marite: I started taking AP and CC courses (via dual enrolment) during my junior years.

How can one have a freshman and senior year when graduating in three years?

What kind of grade weighing does your school have to end up with a GPA of 5.1W /3.9UW?

For what it is worth, I do not think that Princeton meant senior and junior years when they mentioned looking at the last 2 years. At best, they would have only a Fall semester of grades to look at. In your case, I do not see the school overlooking much of your transcript, if any.

Also, be aware that most selective schools do not count -or give credit for- dual enrollment classes unless they EXCEED the regular requirements for high school graduation. In other words, if the classes helped you meeting the graduation requirements, they will not be considered in the same manner as AP credits. Even a state school such as the University of Texas, despite giving 100% credit for dual enrollment classes, does not consider such classes in the admission process.

I am taking a gap year after i graduate to work on a major community project. They said that they take the last two years in account, and since i am taking a gap year, that means my junior and senior years. Hope that clears off some confusion. I called them again and they told me they will account only junior and senior years specifically since I am taking a gap year (which makes up the last 2 years for me.)

They consider junior and senior years in my case, and I took 12 APs, 3 honors and 3 CC courses, which explains the gpa.

I am not concerned about the dual enrolment credits, I just took them to raise my weighted GPA and rank (in my school, honors=4.5, regular=4.0, APs=6.0, CC courses=4.5) I took a total of 19 courses junior and senior years (some of them online which counts for gpa under FL laws).

top schools like Princeton look at the kid, not just the stats. Truth is, they'll do whatever they want in order to get an accurate view of the applicant.

Keep in mind that they've seen every variation imaginable. Home schooling. Nontraditonal schooling. Applicants from all over the world. etc.

I'd quit worrying, apply and move on. Your track record is what it is.

I am a bit confused about your use of tenses and your timeline for applying to colleges.

Are you currently a junior who plans on applying to colleges but taking a gap year before matriculating, or are you currently taking a gap year instead of a fourth year of high school and applying to colleges while on a gap year?

Have you taken the exams for the 12 AP courses you have taken?

Newmassdad, i understand that its not all about stats. But, poor stats will always reduce my chances. I am a very people-oriented person and I think I can dislpay a personal side of myself.

Marite, I signed a contract that I will graduate in three years. Even though I am a "junior," under the contract I am actually a senior graduating May 2006. After I graduate, I will take the gap year. I took 6 APs last year, 6 this year.

Of course, Pton isnt the only place I'm applying to. I have set realistic goals for myself.
