My CR and Writing scores were 680 and 650 respectively on the June SAT administration, but I had an abysmal, horrendous 490 on the Math.

I really need some advice or a good prep book recommendation for math. Anything that will get it over a 550 (and I will take a 550, at the minimum).

I would reccommend lots of practice as the way to do well on the SAT in any section. I used the official (blue) SAT prep book and it was great.

The actual maths is not too hard - if you're having trouble with the concepts then go back and review everything. Do all the practice problems in your maths texts.

Then once you know what you are talking about do lots of practice exams to get used to the test format / guessing / timing and so on.

Hard work not fancy books is what will get you over 550.

I have a similar situation......530 math......so would everyone agree that it is best to learn how to do all the problems on the math section and have it down-pat before you start working on different strategies?

If Math is really a weakness for you, concentrate on being perfect on all the questions labelled as Medium or Easy by the college board--use their 8 practice tests with guide. If you can get most of those right, you can still score in upper 500s on the test. Learn how to avoid careless errors and practice so that you can finish in the given time.
