I resently moved into the U.S (non citizen) from Nigeria with a tourist visa and now I are hoping to school here (to study networking or cyber security) but most of the schools I applied for requires ssn… is there any certain way I can change my visa status from here or are there colleges that doesn’t require the ssn
Could you elaborate?
Most colleges don’t require a SSN for admission, for the simple reason that most international students don’t have one. However, financial aid may be limited to US citizens and permanent residents, and may require a SSN to process. Is that the problem you are experiencing?
I would urge you to avoid that language in the future. Moving implies intent to stay, which is prohibited under a tourist visa and may trigger the cancellation of your visa status. You can say, “I recently entered the US on a tourist visa” or “I am visiting the US as a tourist.”
After you have been admitted to a university, paid a deposit and submitted financial documentation to prove that you can pay for the course of study, the university will issue you a form I-20. You can use that to apply for a [change of status](Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status | USCIS) to F-1, which is the student visa category. Alternatively, you can leave the US and apply for an F-1 visa at a consulate abroad. (That is generally much faster. A change of status application can take half a year to process.)
F-1 students with an on-campus job offer can apply for a SSN, but they don’t qualify for in-state tuition or public financial aid (such as FAFSA).
