Hi.
I am an incoming senior graduating in the year 2015 and I wanted some ideas of some colleges I should be looking at to apply to. I'm really confused on the whole match, reach, safety and needed some prospective ideas.
My stats are:
GPA: 3.957/5.624
SAT: 2150
ACT: 31
AP: World, Psychology, Lang, Cal AB/BC, US HIS, BIO, French, Macro, Lit,
Clubs: French Honor Society (2 years), English Honor Society (2 years), Biomedical Club (2 years) others plus continuing these

Internship at Florida International University in Psychology
150 hours community service church pianist
also hours from internship

what is your major and career goal?

how much will your parents spend each year?

If you are instate for FL and qualify for BF, will your parents pay for you to go OOS?

are you retesting?

what is your M+CR from one sitting?

My major and career goal is psychology but at the same time complete the pre med classes to go to med school. I don’t think my parents can pay much for financial reasons so I’m hoping for financial aid. I am not retesting I am happy with my score and my M+CR is my math I got 720 and reading also 720

If you are a FL resident, you should have no problem with public universities (ie. UF, FSU) or New College of FL (quirky, but has very good graduate school admission results). They can be your safeties. I’d say you can apply almost anywhere else you’d like if you apply there, as well. The most elite, selective colleges will be major reaches for you, so you I’d suggest skipping Harvard and Stanford, or limiting your applications to just one or two of them, and then working your way down. If you have an eye on medical school down the road, it would be a mistake to pile up too much debt as an undergraduate,so you should probably focus on colleges where you can expect a generous aid package.

Do you have any match schools I should do? Do you think I have a chance for matches at schools like wake forest or Brandeis? Or Carnegie Mellon?

Look at the Common Data Sets for each, section C

I know but I may choose some that I may not have a chance in so I wanted a second opinion on my chances at some prospective colleges.

You do have to figure some things out yourself. No one can tell for sure if you can get in or not. The CDS gives you the data to make your own assessment. Nobody knows your own record like you. C7 shows what they’ll use to evaluate you, C9-11 shows what prior accepted students were like.

What do you mean by C7 and C9-11? I’m sorry I’m a novice at this college thing.

Google the Common Data Set for a school. Look at section C. Section C7, section C9, section C11…

Wake Forest has some money but your scores probably aren’t high enough to get you all you need. Brandeis has very little merit and not a lot of FA, I’m sad to say. Carnegie Mellon is pretty stingy.

So, to refresh, it’s not just a matter of getting into a school but a matter of whether or not your scores are going to earn you enough money to go there. If you’re happy with your scores, then choose lower tier schools to get the money. There are lots of 20K merit scholarships out there at 60K schools. Probably won’t do you much good unless your parents make less than 70K, in which case, it is the grant aid you receive that will matter. If you parents have assets, the schools will expect them to part with them.

Run the net price calculators at Brandeis, Dickinson, and Tulane and see what pops up.

Are there schools similar to Brandeis and Carnegie Mellon that do offer good financial aid?

what is your parents situation? do they have a good income, but cant pay much? if so, then going to a school that gives FA wont help you…your parents would still be expected to pay their EFC or more.

FA is based on NEED after the school looks at your parents income/assets. schools dont care if your parents say, well we cant pay much.

for instance, if your parents earn about 90k per year, but cant pay much, your FA pkg would be short…since the school would expect them to pay about 20k+ per year.

or are they lowish income?

How much can they pay each year? 5k? 10k? more? less? ask them!!!

sounds like you need large merit scholarships. Most of those are based on stats, not income. You have the stats for large merit at some schools.
