Hi all, I'm currently in the process of applying to schools and was wondering what my chances for full ride scholarships were. I'm a first generation Korean student with an SAT score equivalent to a 30 on the ACT, and a 3.5 unweighted GPA. I'm taking several AP classes, a few of which are: AP Calculus BC, AP Literature, AP Biology, and AP Euro History. I've also taken the AP US History exam, which I made a four on. I know my GPA is low for some of the highly-competitive scholarships, but it has somewhat of a story behind it. In short, I decided late to actually apply myself in school. In fact, I failed nearly all of my classes my freshman, sophomore, and junior year. At the end of my Junior year, I had a GPA of 2.4, with an awful grasp on rudimentary skills that an average junior would have. But, luckily, I was one year young for the grade I was in, and was able to redo a year without any problems. Since then, I have done multiple credit recovery courses at a highly rigorous school, making all As in each, while also making all As in my classes of that year. I have boosted my GPA from a 2.4 to a 3.5 in only a year, and my ACT score from an eleven to a thirty. I've made tremendous leaps, but my past still haunts me. You can still see my Fs alongside my credit recovery grades, and you can also see the disciplinary trouble I was in before I came to my new school. I guess there's always a consequence for what you do, but; anyways, I supposes my question is: what are my chances of getting a full ride, and where could I get one from?

With a 30 ACT and 3.5 GPA you will be able to get a full tuition scholarship at many colleges, but most will be lessor know, and most likely less prestigious schools. Some of those offers might even include housing and books.

What state do you live in? That will help us give you suggestions. For example, if you live in Alabama then your GPA and test score will give you a full tuition scholarship to U of A: A first-time freshman student who meets the December 15 scholarship priority deadline, has a 30–36 ACT or 1330–1600 SAT score (critical reading and math scores only) and at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA will be selected as a Presidential Scholar and will receive the value of tuition or $39,304 over four years ($9,826 per year).

Other examples:
Louisiana State University OOS Award: Full Tuition Residual COA: $12,590/year Requirements: 3.0 GPA, 30 ACT/1330 SAT (CR+M)

Southeastern Louisiana University Award: Partial Tuition+Room+Board Residual COA: $5,510-$6,510/year

Southern Illinois University Chancellor’s Scholarship Covers in-state tuition, mandatory fees, room & board for a total of 4 years (interview required)

Am I automatically qualified and awarded those scholarships If I apply to those schools? One of the schools that I would like to go to is the University of Kentucky, which is like the LSU of Kentucky. Thank you, by the way.

Here is the scholarship info for U of KY. Deadline is Dec 1 but they say to apply as soon as possible. They give out scholarships on a rolling basis. You can take the ACT or SAT again and they will take results until Jan.

With a 30 ACT and 3.5 uw GPA looks like you would qualify for the ky heritage scholarship of $10,000. Are you out-of-state for KY?

For the higher amount competitive scholarships you need 31 ACT at least.

I would study and retake ACT and apply to these schools and especially KY as soon as possible.

Here are two at Northern Kentucky University. I don’t think the diversity scholarship is guaranteed, but the other one is. Both sound like you might be a good candidate: At Educational Diversity Tuition Scholarship

If you are willing to look around, and if you keep an open mind about where you attend college, I think you will have options for guaranteed full tuition scholarships with a 30 ACT; however, it is unlikely the offers will be from any states flagship school. Good luck.

In the OP, the student asked abut FULL RIDES. If he gets full tuition only, he will still have to pay upward of $10,000 a year for remaining costs.
