I NEED TO FIND A MAJOR

I’m not very worried about my grades and getting into a college but I need to find a major. I HATE math with a passion which limits me to very low paying jobs. I’ve thought about being a Sociology, Philosophy, Social Work, Journalism major (not all at once). I want to go to NYU which is my dream school but I want to major in something that is practical enough to get me job but also something that I love doing. They always say, “If you love what you do, you never work a day in your life.” I want to live by that so bad. If anyone could help that would be great! Thank you!!!

Just because you’re not a strong math student doesn’t mean you’ll have to resign yourself to a life of poverty. You don’t have to decide on a major right now – a lot of students enter college undeclared. You can explore your passions in your first year through various electives.

However, it is important to note that NYU is a very expensive school with pretty frugal financial aid policies - many students graduate with debt up to their eyeballs which really wouldn’t work too well for the majors you listed; make sure you apply to a wide range of schools - including schools where you qualify for generous (need or merit) aid if necessary.

Minority Studies might be a good fit.

Worry about grades first. Not overly so, but keep yourself afloat so you have college options. What year are you? That should make a bit of a difference in if/when you need to choose/narrow down your options. As much as it sucks, high school for the most part is just an audition for college now unless you have a very clear idea of what you want to do early on. Use it to explore fields you would consider for a major. Social sciences certainly seem like your best bet as they have some broad yet interesting / unique applications if you find the right fit.

No it doesn’t and sociology will require some math even for a very social-focused sociology degree.

Use your first few years to explore. You don’t have to declare as a freshmen and most don’t stick with their first major.

I thought it was spot on with suggesting majors for my son.
