I am struggling to decide on a major?

I really really enjoy traveling, and want my job to involve travel. I want to make a difference in my community regarding poverty and educational equality. I am good at math, particularly algebra, but really enjoy sociology/psychology and I am on the newspaper team and really enjoy that as well. I am a junior in high school and have considered the following majors:
Psychology
Sociology
Public Relations/Image Management
Education
Counseling
Human Resources
Business Administration and Management
Political Science
Public Administration
Journalism
Communication Studies
Accounting
Finance
Marketing
Public Relations
International Development
Education Administration

Since you’re only a junior in high school, you don’t need to choose your major yet. When you apply for college, though, you might face some choice point since some of the majors that interest you are offered in different academic units of universities (e.g., the business school, the journalism school, the school of education, etc.) and different units might have different admission policies.

The first thing to do is to group your potential majors into those that go together by subject matter or by the academic unit that offers them. You end up with this:
-Psychology, Counseling
-Sociology
-Public Relations/Image Management, Marketing
-Journalism, Communication Studies
-Education, Education Administration
-Business Administration (including Management, Human Resources, Accounting, Finance, Marketing)
-Political Science, Public Administration
-International Development
-Math

I noticed that you didn’t list math as a potential major, even though you indicated you are good in math. So, I added it to the list.

Next, you can cross off counseling and education administration since those typically are not undergraduate majors.

Finally, look at the remaining groupings of majors to see if any of them involve your stated career and other interests in travel, community/poverty & educational equality, math, sociology/psychology, and communications (newspaper). I think you’ll find that it’s difficult to accommodate all of those interests within any one major (e.g., travel may have to be on your own). Nonetheless, here are some possible educational and career directions (including some you might not have considered):
-Teaching/Urban Education (including math education)
-Human Resources/Adult Education/Job Training/Literacy Education
-Social Work; International Social Work (at the grad level)
-Public Policy (either at the undergrad level, or at the grad level after undergrad majors in economics & political science or possibly, sociology)
-International Development/Finance—> Microfinance (look it up)
-Social Entrepreneurship
-Nonprofit Management/Fundraising (certificate, possibly at the graduate level)
-Sociology, Political Science, Economics, Urban Studies, Business—>Urban Planning (at grad level)

This is so helpful! thank you so much
