I really need tips for Film Schools!! Help me PLZ

Helloooo~ I am a Junior in HS. I decided to aim for Film schools or SCAs.
I wanna be a director or PD.
And I am really surprised to see threads talking about slim chances of getting in to
some eminent Film Schools such as USC, UCLA, Tisch, NU ,,, and others too!!!
My dream school is USC SCA... Division of Film & Television Production

In fact, I am international student(South Korean), studying in Korea, preparing for
state's universitie. As a consequence, I can only gain some superficial knowleges about
various Film schools since it is hard to meet alumis or visit schools.
And I am really struggling to prepare for them.
Like everyone near me is into IR, or Business Majors .
None of them is thinking about film as a major. Hard to find a company.
So PLZ help this frustrated soul.

Here is my problem.

Like I told ya, I only have very vague idea preparing for SCAs.
I love watching movies and shooting films (it was not an easy EC to do... costed a lot of time and money).
I have shot 5 minute crappy but self content movie... talking about
narcolepsy.... and some ads for my friends clubs and parody of popular Dramas....
But still comparing to many other outstanding student's portfolio, I feel inferior.

When I saw requirements for
"USC SCA Division of Film & Television Production",
tasks seemed to me very massive.

They want,

A. Writing samples,

1. An outline for a four-minute film that contains no dialogue
2. A dialogue scene between two people.
3. Describe a concept for a feature-length movie, fiction or documentary,

B. Visual samples,(choose one)

1. Create a brief narrative video in which you had a major creative role
2. Prepare a series of six photographs you have taken which, when viewed in a specific sequence, portray a unique and original character or which tells a simple narrative story.

C. Portfolio List

which seems to be a tremendous job.

I don't really have a clue how to start them. My AP's will finish this may.
And will try to score as high as possible in this June. And as soon as those big tests are over, I shall spend all my passion and time for preparing those three tasks.

And since there is not much time left before applying season,
I don't want to waste a second.

Can any former experiencers can gimme any tips for preparing portfolios and samples?
And how you guys have prepared for them??
If possible, I am really eager to watch samples that you guys have created.

PS. is there a ED for Film Majors? especially USC SCA?

Thanx for reading this total long thread from far east Asia. Please be my savior.

hello,

USC does not necessarily require you to have prior film experience. A good amount of the people who make their way there from high school don’t have much experience but their own personal experience. If you exhibit consistent passion, that builds as you move forward, that’s good. I believe you can mention your specific problem in a section of the application.

However, if you’re creative/original enough, and find a way to stand out (being in Korea is already one way of doing that) then you already have a shot. Keep your grades up too because that’s important as well. That’s what screwed me up.

Tips: talk to people who are interested in film around where you live! (this is essential for building your own creativity and understanding the art form)

Reminder: keep in mind, loving to watch movies is sometimes not enough to like making films. when things are on a bigger scale, there is a lot more behind it than just filming/editing things and watching it.

by the way, i love korea/asia how is everything over there? I would love to visit that country sometime

Hello Geyser!

Thanx you for some great tips.
Very delight to know that you like South Korea.
Not thing really much happend here, except our embrassing neighbor
North Korea is playing with his rockets.
Ya should totally visit sometime. I am sure it won’t be a bad experience.

I am just very worried about Portfolio. I think epecially SCA considers great value for
studen’ts work. I just don’t have confidence that I will be able to produce some
good quality out come. I wish I could see former studnets works and check my level.

Hey geyser. Do you think it will be a wise way to stand out if I lear VFX, or CGI skills and
show off on my portfolio? I don’t know how good is american student’s work, but I still think
I will be able to gain some advantage of learning those skills and if I can actually apply those skills on my film. But learning those programs will cost a lot of money, time , energy.

I tried to do it by my self, and it wasn’t easy at all. I gave up learning it thorugh books.
So I am planning to register an VFX academy ( Korea is heaven of Academy… :LOL)
if it can gurantee increasing my chances of getting in…

How do you think about this plan?

Did you put a lot of effort for your portfolios?
