I really took a risk on my college essays

Jersey13: Well, I figured it’s never too early to start. I’m not going to start it or anything. I won’t do that until the summer before my senior year.

I V: Wow, I don’t like to do things (well, most things) at the last minute, but I’m glad it worked for you. I won’t start the essay for a while. I’m just writing down ideas.

Age gap? Ha. One thing older folks know how to do superbly- maybe far better than seniors- is google. Takes you straight to the videos and Urban Dictionary. Never underestimate the savvy of an adcom. They don’t specialize in you young ‘uns fer nuthin’. Good luck. If your smarts showed through, your essay will be fine. IMO.

ps- you might find the alternate meanings, uh, interesting.

@mandym, I think the 1980 is the 25th percentile, and the second is the 75th percentile.
@HelloImChelsea, I started in July of my senior year, and a Brown student told me my essays will be published o_O

I’d never depend on SAT scores to get in~ my SATs are 1870 so I wouldn’t worry about your scores~

AmazingOnline: Wow! Your essays must’ve been great! That’s a big deal to have that happen! I’m just gonna shoot for a composite score of 30 on the ACT.

@mandym

You’re confusing median and mean. Just by knowing the middle 50% range doesn’t mean you can tell where the average is.

@OP:

I wish you luck, but honestly, none of us know anything about admissions except anecdotal evidence.

Your essay matters some but I think that if you have high grades and weak ECs you won’t get in with a generic essay. You need to be more daring and outgoing because there are handfuls of people like you.

What are some of you ECs and why are you applying there?

Like others have said, I doubt the admissions officer reading your essay would catch the reference, but I guess they could always google “dougie” and figure it out…

If it makes you feel better…If I was on the Brown admissions committee, I would accept you and then proceed to teach you how to dougie. :)

Best of luck!

My ECs are:
newspaper for 2 years, editor for 1
advanced video/media production - we broadcast a weekly show to the school
philosophy club founder and president (3 years)
job shadowing a reporter for the LA times (15 hours)
and a few other minor ones (CSF, government club, an ROP class)

and I have pretty much no awards, except distinguished/collegiate scholar (school). The reason I want to go to Brown is mainly for the New/Open Curriculum. I could go into detail about it but I’m sure that most of you like it for the same reasons as me.

Thanks, that would be a pretty cool interview… dougie lesson haha

HelloImChelsea- I wrote my CommonApp Essay on being that short- I smiled seeing someone else want to write about height. But, like others have said, you have quite some time.

aaileen: That’s funny! At least I’m not alone! With my luck, Brown will have changed their essay topics when it comes time for me to apply.
