Brown Essays--why bother?

so, i’m a little freaking out. do i write all my essays really quickly now or make myself stress a lot before handing in the perfect essay? i know college reps always stress essays, but wouldn’t they all start to sound the same after a while? this is pretty cynical, but i almost just don’t see the point anymore. does Brown even care?

I don't think they'd want a first draft...

yes they care.

And you can make them unique...you just need to be creative. There are some very interesting essays that I have read before...which took alot of time and effort to craft.

If you want to get in to Brown (which I think you do)...then start crafting them, you have about a month still.

Good luck.

Make them care.

You might as well start asking what's the point of applying to Brown....

i know you're stressed out and prob. applying to a million schools, but if you think about it, numbers and clubs are much more likely to sound the same than an essay. you cant change your gpa or ECs now, but the essay is your chance to stand out and not sound the same as everyone else. take a deep breath, and work your ass off for this essay, b/c it might just be your ticket in to brown.

i just found this. it's long but good.

hope this helps!

Well said jenz129

Take it as a writing assignment - show some care in doing it.

Talk about one or two things.

In most cases I doubt that it is the make or break part of an application.

Well, if I'm not mistaken, I think Brown has the most essays on their app...so yeah, I think they care quite a lot.

Don't freak out! Do, however, put care into the essay. Let yourself get worked up about what you're passionate about. You can be pretty creative with it- this should NOT be a cookie-cutter five-paragraph essay about "how I overcame obstacles in my life"- but it should still be relatively clear and concise.

And, as far as I know, Brown only has one essay (unless you're going for PLME or some of the other sciences, I think), unless they've changed something within the last year.

I have no proof for this other than anecdotal evidence, but Brown is the Land of Quirkiness, so I would make an effort to try to write something unique. An essay with personality is definitely a plus.

Maybe only one big essay...

But do not be too quirky. Too often ppl try too hard to stand out and end up with a "w t f??" from admissions officers.

Of course; nobody wants to read something that isn't even recognizable as an essay, and you want to craft your essay carefully to make sure that your intelligence and maturity come through. Still, no admissions officer wants to read the same thing that they've read on hundreds of other applications, and with so many applicants with excellent records and scores, you have to stand out in some way. I'm convinced that my essay is the reason why I got accepted; my academics met the standards as well, but that essay allowed me to talk about something I'm really passionate about that would not have shown up in any other place on the application (but was absolutely relevant to my academic goals and love of learning).
