I really want to live in California (I live in Washington and its always cloudy and rainy)
Wouldn’t mind going to UWash but again California is much nicer to live in. Cost not a problem
Thanks a lot!
UCLA and Berkely: Reach
Other 7: Low Reaches / Matches
You’re GPA is good as are your extraciriculars and rigor. However, a 27 is a low score for both UCLA and Berkeley. You’re a smart kid and I think if you got a 30+ you’d be set! Also think about what you want to major in so you can see what schools bet fit your interest. Good luck!
PS I’m also thinking of UC. Could you chance me back?
Title: UChicago / UCLA / JHU / UW - Madison / Rochester (WILL CHANCE BACK IF LEFT LINK!!!)
So when you say cost is not a problem, are you saying you can afford $55K per year? No scholarships are available to OOS students.
Agree with @lovesdogs101 that a 27 will not cut it at Cal/UCLA, but based on this years’ acceptances, a few more would be off limits without a 30 or higher, minimum.
Not taking APs until senior year will hurt at the more competitive UC’s, unless your school didn’t offer them earlier.
Note this is based on current GPA, which should go over a 4.0 with all of those AP classes, as well as getting a 27 on the ACT. I’m sure your stats will be up by next fall’s application deadline.
You’re a good student, it’s just that college acceptance applications and admission rates rates are crazy right now!
Cal, UCLA: extremely high reach need 32-36 ACT
UCSD: high reach 30+ ACT
UCSB: Reach 30+ ACT
Irvine: Low reach 30 ACT
Davis: Match with higher ACT
Riverside: Match
Santa Cruz: Safety
Merced: Safety
Also be sure to check the UC website to ensure you are taking the right classes and Math tests to qualify. Good luck!
Go read some of the ‘I got wait listed at Davis!’ threads. Seriously, kids with ACTs of 35 got wl at Davis and UCSD this year (albeit maybe slightly lower GPA than yours). They are not sure things even with very good stats.
If you are serious about CA why not look at some of the private schools as well… check out Occidental, Chapman, the Claremont colleges, USC, LMU, and maybe USD and SCU. They might end up actually being cheaper as an OOS kid than the state schools.
Good luck!
Alright, I guess that’s fine if California doesn’t have as great as chances. I will still apply to them because you never know. Can you guys recommend any good matches for me for computer science colleges (Doesn’t have to be in California). In state for me is UWash btw
Hey @TomS31415 Please don’t be discouraged. You have a semester and a half to get your ACT up over 30. I think you can take it twice in that time. Now you have a bar you know you need to meet to get in. Your grades show you are a smart kid. Go for it!
Any tips to study? I have the red book. Anything else I should do to maximize NY score
Are you able to afford any online or in person classes? My kids did better after tutoring, which included taking several practice tests. I was able to find low cost options- it doesn’t have to be costly. My kids will tell you the practice tests helped the most and they did raise their scores 3 and 4 points I believe (might have been 2 and 3 but it made all the difference).
Can’t afford it. Any at home studying I can do to get a 30+?
I know Khan Academy has free SAT tutoring online, as does the ACT. Sign up now for the ACT question of the day and do it daily. Use all of the free samples and advice on ACT.org. Our high school recommended Number2.com but I don’t have personal experience. The red book is great (look for new versions at half price book stores or yard sales). My kids tended to do better concentrating online.
Also, as an aside Washington has a reciprocal reduced tuition deal with several states, including other warm ones. Take a look at http://wiche.edu/wue to find out about some western schools where you might get reduced tuition, including the Cal States.
You don’t need tutoring at all.You can definitely get higher than a 30 without attending a class.
There are many, many schools in southern CA besides public CA colleges. And many if them offer FA or merit scholarships irrespective of state residency.
Wait, I don’t understand. You can’t afford to take classes for the ACT but you can afford fees of $55K per year at a UC? What am I missing?
