i reallyy wanna get into u-m :( helppp

heyy im gonna be a senior at a very good in-state high school and i'm not sure about my chances. im asian indian (born there). my grades dropped junior year second semester...but i had a death in the family and i had to miss a lot of school :-/
wellll my GPA for high school is 3.6, and i've taken plenty honors classes for math/english and AP classes for U.S. history and Chemistry (some of my B's are from honors classes and AP Chem). as a senior, i'm going to be taking AP Physics C, Calc BC, 12 AP english, year of P.E. (to meet grad requirements), spanish 2, organic chem and accounting.
i know that during senior year my GPA will raise, as will my SAT and ACT scores.
my ACT score is a 29, and my SAT score is a 1940 (but im retaking both in october)

EC's are NHS, Orchestra, Project LEAD, BWB, JV Tennis (tournament medals too), and some community service.

i jus wanna know if i even have a chance....reallyyy wanna get innnnn

helppp :(

You and I have very similar stats. Good luck to you!

I think you're a match. Explain why your grades dropped junior year. What's your SAT on a 1600 scale?

Ben, your GPA is low by Michigan standards, but a death in the family is an acceptable reason for a dip in grades. Be sure you explain the situation to the University. Also, if your school councelor can confirm the death and how it affected you, it would obviously help.

Your ACT/SAT scores are ok too. I'd say Michigan is a match/slight reach for you.

i'm not sure what that means :-/ but i got a 740 on math, 640 on writing, and 560 on reading.

Michigan did not look at the W section of the SAT last year, only the M and R sections. If that's the case again this year, you are best served just using your ACT score.

how and where (on my application) would i explain why my grades dropped junior year? (sorry for the late reply i've been out of town)

You also may want to recompute your GPA to the Michigan formula, to see what that is.

A=4, B=3, etc.
No plusses or minuses
No weighting of honors or AP
Only count sophomore and junior year
Only academic subjects - no band, phys ed, art, etc.

Also, apply ASAP - the early bird gets the acceptance.

have you looked at the online app yet? because there is actually a box where they ask you if there is anything you would like to explain on your transcript (up to 6 lines)? I just wrote "Yeah--I'm the ****." But it would be a very good opportunity for you to explain it. By the way, Mich has about a 50% acceptance rate so dont get too worked up, as long as your app is solid i think youll be fine.

by the way, ben wallace rocks now that hes on the bulls.

ahhh yeahh.. b-wallace on the bulls. they're gonna be fun to watch.

benwallace do you go to troy or athens?

I heard that IS applicants for Michigan can have slightly lower stats than OOS applicants and still be accepted. I'm gonna be a OSS first-year student this fall and I know that the essays can Make-Break an acceptance. Write your best on the essays, raise your GPA to around 3.8 and apply soon. Good luck

AzureK, I think it is important to qualify your statement further. Michigan, like any university, will tolerate slightly lower stats from international students in anything that places them at a disadvantage, and that usually means SATs and English exams for non-native speakers. In all other ways, IS are expected to perform just as well as OOS students.

Maybe by IS he meant "In State"?

True. I did not think of that.

Yes, by IS, I meant In-State. I apologize for not being specifc. I was lazy so I felt like using abbreviations. I noticed that a lot of people used OOS for Out-of-State so I used IS for In-State.

lol oo icic.
lets say you apply early, say mid september. but you retake your act in october, do better. and your GPA also goes up. Does u-mich see these improvements and then decide, or do decide based on wat u sent. cuz i know that my gpa will be going upp, and i want them to see it, cuz it'll be better. but i dont wanna wait till january to apply. any suggestions/advice as to how this works?

I think I can help you with that one. I didn't know you were a bulls fan? Anyways, when I was applying, my ACT was good but not great. I was stuck in the same predicament that you are in right now, but I decided to send in my app early with that ok score and retake the Oct. version of the ACT. Turns out I think, that is what made the difference between me getting accepted and me getting deferred because I did improve on my score and I did get my acceptance letter after the Oct. test date which means that admissions must have surely seen that Oct. score before making a decision. So my advice to you is turn in your app now and take that ACT in Oct. and improve on it. As for the GPA a 3.6 is not too bad but I know for sure Umich made their decision on me before my improved senior grades were sent out so if you send in your app now the admissions people will most likely see that 3.6 avg unless you get deferred for grades which is then you can show that you did indeed improved senior yr. Do you go to troy hs? If you do it's a huge Umich feeder school and I do know some people who have gotten into Umich this year w/26's and around the same gpa if that's any consolation to you. :)
