I currently have a 3.71 GPA and if I made all A's I would have a 3.82. I just failed my physics exam today making an A impossible to attain. At the end of the semester, I am going to end up with all A's and one B(physics). My cumulative GPA will be 3.70ish with 45 hours. I am majoring in Computer Science and was planning on applying to UIUC, UT Austin, Texas A&M, and GA Tech for Fall 2010. Do I even stand a chance at being competitive anymore since I am applying from OOS? If you think I will get rejected from these schools, can you please suggest a good school I should apply to(preferably within the top 30)? Thanks.

One B does not doom you. Charge on.

I agree with you to a certain extent, but in my case, I think that my GPA is too low to transfer to any of these schools.

GPA depends on your class status. I doubt a B will crush your dreams…

So your saying I still have a very high chance of getting into once of these top schools if I apply with a 3.70 and 45 hours?

I don’t “do” chances. But if I did :), I would make absolutely no distinction between an applicant with a 3.70 vs. a 3.82 GPA. Similarly, I would not expect one B on your record to have much effect.

Let’s face it, the top Comp Sci schools hand out C’s right and left to their students; they expect Physics and similar courses to be tough. B is a good grade for such a class. Yes, I know, you are not at a top-30 school right now. I still think one B will not “doom” you.

Good luck.

I ain’t sure about UT Austin but I remember hearing a representataive from Texas A&M @ College Station encouraging my friend to apply with 3.6 something GPA. As long as you are above 3.5, they will probably admit you if you have good recs and ECs.

And if you are a Texan, A&M offers guaranteed transfer at a few community colleges for students with GPA 3.3+ Therefore I think, even being OOS student, you do have good chances!

Idk if it differs for OOS students, but I’m from Illinois and transferring to UIUC with that GPA should not be a problem so long as you have all the prerequisite courses done.

A 3.7 would be very iffy for engineering or business at UIUC, but everything else is largely uncompetitive. And, note that I say uncompetitive in the sense that if you have a solid GPA and have prereqs done, you’ll get in.

I will be applying into CS for my primary major, and CE or EE for second major choice. I talked to an admissions representative from UIUC and he informed me that CS is just as competitive as Engineering at UIUC. In the long run, I want to become a network security engineer and through lots of research have come to the conclusion that majoring in CS for undergrad would be the best way to go about it. My main reason for transfer is simply the fact that CS at U of M is a joke. Most of the staff have no idea what they are doing, and there is hardly any research going on in this major. Another reason is that I want to work for companies like Google, Apple, or Facebook and graduating from a well known, prestigious university will benefit me more than graduating from U of M. Any graduates from some of these schools care to comment on their job outlook after graduation?
