Just this week I started a lovely little club called IWRC (Pronounced I-work, haha, get it? No? ok…) which stands for International Women’s Rights Club. I’m really interested in looking at the rights (or lack of rights) of females on a global scale, and we’re kicking off our second meeting by watching the movie “Half the Sky.”
HoWeVeR,
I did not expect the club to be nearly as successful as it is. We already overcrowded the classroom we hold our meetings in, and 10-15 more people have expressed interest in joining just this past week. I’m the only leader, since I founded the club, and I’m feeling really pressured to come up with awesome and thoughtful discussion topics and things to do.
It would be really cool if we could have a balance between learning and action–like maybe raising money for a cause or something? But I’ve never done this before and don’t really know what’s interesting and what’s not…
Does anyone have any ideas? If so, I would LOVE to hear them!!
If you want a more global outlook on this issue, here is a charity “A Global Friendship” that is concerned with the issue of Women’s Rights.
“A Global Friendship (AGF) is an international non-profit that works towards women’s empowerment and poverty alleviation. We create economic opportunities for women in developing regions around the world who live on under $10 a day, helping them to break the cycle of poverty.”
They have campus clubs where you can spread awareness and raise money for the charity. This might be a way to structure your club, for example in addition to other events.
