I Think I Have a Problem

3.7 gpa 2400 sat 700+ on 4 subject tests (lit,bio,math 2, US)

-dream school was ilr at cornell also was to apply to dartmouth and brown, notre dame and other selective colleges
-my other choices included syracuse, binghamton, boston college, boston university and fordham.

MAJOR PROBLEM I DID HORRIBLE ON THE NEW YORK REGENTS EXAMinations
-80 on algebra 74 geometry 83 bio 86 spanish 77 on english,
-the only ones i did well on were a 92 on global and a 97 on us and a 90 on chem

these grades appear on my transcript, which is why I’m so worried all counted as a fifth quarter except for english
ARE MY HOPES AT A GOOD COLLEGE DEAD!!!

STOP SHOUTING AT THE WHOLE CC COMMUNITY!

& don’t start multiple threads on the same topic.

the answer is NO your hopes are not dead.

I assume those scores are already included in your GPA, right? If so just apply away. The effect is already there. It’s just another grade. I personally have to wonder how someone with a 2400 SAT can tank so many Regents.

Actually, no. Regents scores typically aren’t calculated and appear at the bottom of your NYS transcript. It will look bad in general to have test grades below 80%. It will hurt you especially at NYS public and private schools. Cornell is very familiar with NYS regents testing and so is Columbia and NYU. You can retake regents if you want though. I strongly encourage you to retake the English regents. It’s really easy if you practice the essays and should be a cakewalk the second time around. Has the regents passed already or is it next week? If it has passed, take them time to take it in August.

Did you talk all eight this year? I’d talk to your GC and find out exactly how regents grades appear on your HS transcript that gets sent to colleges (which is different from your report card). At this point you just have to see how your grades turn out and plan college applications accordingly. I’d add in another safety or so (maybe a less competitive SUNY school) but with your SAT you should be fine for schools like Fordham, Syracuse and BU for sure. The competitive schools are pretty much a crapshoot for everyone.

How regents exams are shown on the transcript and how they get counted in the final grade varies a great deal from school to school. At our local HS regents grades count for only a tiny % of the final grade and don’t show up at all on the transcript.

I’ve never heard that colleges look at these tests…unless they’re calculated into your GPA somehow, I wouldn’t worry.

How do you have results already? English was just given yesterday afternoon. It would not be scored by now. Chemistry hasn’t even been administered. So while the low grades could be problematic for entry to schools like Cornell, the clairvoyant nature of your abilities are apt to earn you…well you would know cause you are clairvoyant.

pineapple86, I’d worry. The OP apparently just found out about the bad scores so the multiple posts would ordinarily be understandable except…How does this student have the results of the tests before the tests are administered? lol:

June 19, 2015 - Friday Geometry (Former Standard) Earth Science

Chemistry

Moreover, the OP has posted under several different names and has described different statistics each time - one time a 2200 SAT, now a 2400 SAT, both a 4 and a 5 on AP US History (when scores are not even available yet) etc.

I was trying to post on another duplicate thread and it simply disappeared. The poster can not possibly have the results for these exams. Some (chem and geometry) haven’t been administered yet. Others (Algebra) haven’t yet been scored. And still others (Spanish) haven’t been administered since 2011.

An Spanish has not been given since 2011!

I don’t think as much weight will be put on these regional test because perhaps the competitive applicant from Kansas would have done worse. Besides, no use stressing now, convince yourself it’s all good and move on

i took these tests over the course of 3 years, english was given yesterday and my score was in fact posted by 10 that night. same with US which i took on tuesday. all others were taken in years past. Also, I took the Spanish regent in June 2014.

The last Spanish Regents exam was administered in June 2011. I can find no evidence of any administration after June 2011.

No you could not have taken a Spanish Regents exam in June 2014. That was not possible. Further, I guess the June 2011 administration of the exam must have been only as a make-up for those who flunked an earlier administration. The official NY Regents site lists:

"Other Subjects, where exams are no longer given:

Agriculture
Art
Bookkeeping
Business Law
Foreign Languages
French (1949 - 2010)
Italian (1934 - 2010)
Spanish (1934 - 2010)
German (1934 - 2008)
Hebrew (1949 - 2008)
Latin (1934 - 2009)
Homemaking
Music
Shorthand, Typewriting and Transcription"

MODERATOR’S NOTE:
While regents foreign language exams were indeed cut, many districts have developed their own exams which they treat as regents and many, incorrectly, call them as such.

If you think a poster lives under a bridge, simply don’t feed him.

Spanish is called a FLACS here in NY now and it’s probably what she’s talking about. It’s pretty much a regents in spanish. They treat it like a regents at least. That’s so odd. You got a 2400 on your sat and you’re getting 70s and 80s on your regents. It can’t look good but it is what it is and you’ll have to deal with it. It will affect your chances to get into certain colleges. I would suggest retaking them.

i took most of my regents freshmen and sophmore year, before i even began studying for the sat

Being a big dreamer is nice, but you really can’t get good help from the CC community unless you give you correct information. As "fightingirshmen,"back in April, you indicated that you were taking US History and Chemistry subject tests in June. You could not have received your scores back yet. As “bobbykevin,” you indicated in June that you had received a 2200 on your SATs. Something is not adding up - if you want help from people, it’s better to say that your practice tests have been in a certain range for example, rather than just giving scores that you think you will get.

In terms of your regents grades, if they are in fact a fifth "quarter"grade, they might be factored into your final grades, which could be a problem. Moreover, I think that while in general, regents grades are not that important, if you have several that are quite low, a college might be concerned, either about the quality of your school or your study habits.
