I think that UT should get moved to the CC top universities

such other public universities such as UVA, UNC, Michigan, UCB and UCLA have made it onto that short list, why not us?

I petition that UT be put on the list of "top universities"

who's with me?

Its a very good school but its no UCLA

really? I would’ve picked UCLA to have been the weakest of those schools I listed above.

CC Top Universities are based on the stu*pid USNWR ranking.

While UT is a very good school, the 10% rule makes it somewhat of Texas Only School. Look at the OOS and international admission numbers for the universities you mention. Additionally, look at some of the SAT and ACT scores for incoming freshmen for the other schools.

Once your here, who cares? I mean you will know if its a good school or not. I like it here, and I could care less what rank we are on USNWR rankings. Not to mention pretty much any ranking system is ******** anyways, there is no concrete way of saying this school is XX% better than this school when we talk about the more elite schools in the country.

I don’t understand either why we’re not in the list of top universities.
can we actually petition to CC’s admin?

I thought the CC Top Universities were just the most popular non-Ivies among CC applicants.

we’ve got a pretty big fanbase here, I’d say we deserve to be in it.

I personally pondered that question many a times. We are ranked in the top 10 in many areas, business, engineering, computer science. Yet, we are ranked below UC-San Diego, UC-Davis, UC-Santa Barbara, and UC-Irvine (third tier UC schools). UC-Berkeley is a legitimate case, UCLA is an argument, but below 4 other UC schools? Come on, give me a break.

The key point of US News ranking is reputation rated by faculties and students. This methodology heavily favors the East and West coast school which have more concentrated population/colleges. People are more likely to vote in familiar schools than unfamiliar ones. UT, located in the South, arguably, is a drawback. Besides, Rice, what other schools in the surrounding states is even in the top 50? How many UC and East Coast (especially NE) schools are in the top 50. I highly doubt the disproportionate amount of top 50 schools is because they are actually “better.”

I’ve lived in many parts of the country; many people associate the Wild West persona with Texas. I think we are being gigged for that, probably more by the student surveys than the faculty. In the academe, UT engineering, business, plan II (just to name a few) are highly regarded, more so than UC-Irvine at least.

However, I think the image is changing for UT and UT is gaining more prestige. You can see it through our slightly upward movement in rankings. Plus, people do recognize UT’s top ranked colleges. What would help our case if UT graduates spread across the country a bit more, instead of staying in Texas.

The college ranking is even more screwed up than the BCS system. At least in BCS, you can put schools head and head in bowl matches. In college ranking it’s all perception. Be glad you are attending one of the hidden jewels of academe.

I am in international student and UT Austin is regarded as good as an Ivy school here. People dream of going to UT but as the acceptance rate for international students is low people end being rejected. I actually know a person from my state who turned down Cornell and Berkeley and went to UT Austin for Petroleum Engineering. I think UT Austin deserves to be up there in the CC Top Universities.

I hope i get in this year. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Yeah that makes no sense. I will be the first one to talk up our engineering program, but that was probably a bad decision.

I’m originally from Argentina, and all of the colleges over there. I also have a friend who’s from South Korea, and according to her, all of her friends know about UT, but none of them have heard of Rice. interesting…

UT has better international recognition because we are HUGE. Rice only has 3,000 students total, the alumni base isn’t that big. UT’s international ranking is higher than UT’s US rankings (over UVA, UNC, and UCLA).

Also, going to UT for Petroleum Engineering is a no-brainer over Berkeley/Cornell (not sure if Berkeley or Cornell even have a Petroleum Engr program). All the oil companies are around Texas and the job placement rate is 98% (at least when I was in school). If I had a choice for other engineering majors, I’d choice to Berkeley over UT if money wasn’t a concern (speaking as an engineering grad).

Everyone told him the same thing, that he is a dumb ass that he should go to Berkeley, but he said that he wanted to have a great social life along with a great engineering program and now he is very happy over there and knows that it was a great decision made by him.

I agree with you Shivamparikh, I’d say the two are comparable programs, but you just can’t beat UT’s social life.

I’d also be so bold to say that we command at least as much respect as Virginia, Michigan and North Carolina.(we already established UCLA). Anybody else agree?

I will admit however, that Virginia has a better law school.

Well, as far as I know internationally North Carolina and Virginia aren’t so famous schools, i mean I know they are up there with the best but internationally UCLA has more respect then any other school then comes UT Austin.

i also agree that UT should definitely be on CC top universites as well at least in the top 30 on US News rankings. It is prepostorous that the majority of UC’s are ranked higher than UT. Id say only UCB and UVA and arguably UM should be ranked higher than UT when it comes to public schools. UT has the eng, buis, comp sci as mentioned above. when i look at eng or busines rankings i see no mention of ucla or ucsd or unc.

I absolutely LOVE UT, have been there several times and (thanks to God) I have gotten almost a full ride in the engineering school. I can absolutely not wait to go, UT is so amazing that I could only figure about three feasible schools that I would want to go to over UT: Harvard, Yale, Princeton.

In my opinion I who cares what our national perception is, UT is great we know that and that is all that matters. Heck I didn’t even know UT was this prestigious to other people around the country until I got on CC, because the perception among top Texas applicants is that UT is a fallback.
