I thought the UF app opened on Aug 1st?

When does it open, I tried to open it today and there was no fall of 2014 option. ???

Give it some time, it is scheduled for Aug 1, but it may not open till the 2nd…typical bureaucracy…

The important date is when it closes on Nov 1. Having your application completed early, doesn’t gain you any advantages for entry/finicial aid, etc…

Good Luck! and get back to working on that essay!

The freshman application won’t open until September 3rd because they are making significant changes to the application.

Yeah I was ready to start my app but they not opening it until September. I hope they gave a good essay prompt.

I already started my essay and person resume? If i have to start over ill be LIVID.

I wonder if they’ll extend the application deadline and the decisions deadline also

No. The deadlines are still the same.

The essay is changing? -_-

They need to just jump on the common app bandwagon for Gods sake. I already wrote an essay and redrafted several times for the essay that they have on their site

Ill have a frikking panic attack if I have to write a new essay in the 2 months that they give you. Im not even done revising and i’ve already put a month and a half in.

I called the admissions office this morning and they did confirm that the current essay prompt, on the website, is the one that will be used this year. So get back to your essays!!

PS: you should note that the current essay prompt for this year, is a little bit different than the one used last year…my dd is having to make some minor adjustments to the essay she had worked on in May.

Essay Topic
In the space provided, please write a concise narrative in which you describe a meaningful event, experience or accomplishment in your life and how it will affect your college experience or your contribution to the UF campus community. You may want to reflect on your ideas about student responsibility, academic integrity, campus citizenship or a call to service.

Good Luck!

I can confirm what the above poster has stated. Call the admissions office yourself if you need further confirmation.

Although some of the admissions officers are very unhelpful, a more helpful AO confirmed that the “Family and Personal Resume” section and the “Personal Essay” section of the application will remain essentially the same.

Family and Personal Resume Section:
[University of Florida - Admissions](Freshman - How To Apply - University of Florida)

Personal Essay:
[University of Florida - Admissions](Freshman - How To Apply - University of Florida)

The admissions officer also said that one of the largest reasons that the application is being delayed is do to something called a “Self-Reported GPA.” Essentially, as the woman described it, you input your high school transcript into the online application, and the application automatically reweights your GPA for you.

As I understand it (and I’m sure further information will be revealed soon enough by helpful CC users), UF will only want a physical transcript sent to the them AFTER acceptance notices are sent out. The self reported GPA is to speed up the admissions process (because each one used to be hand-calculated), and the physical transcript is to check to make sure everyone was being honest.

Overall: Anyone who has started building their resume may continue to do so.

Self-reported GPA? That sounds like a potential train wreck….it will be up to the student to determine if a class is honors (for the +½ GPA) or AP/IB/AICE/DE (for the +1 GPA). That can be tricky…I would hate for someone to be accepted, only to have it rescinded by UF after they re-do the GPA based on the physical transcripts.

We’ll have to see how UF’ has modified the application. Hopefully it’s easy to use, and has some audits built in that will minimize any errors.

A self reported GPA really scares me. Some of these kids THINK they have 4.4s but in reality have 4.0s due to the way UF weighs things. I’m on the lower end of the GPA spectrum and would be devastated to be denied when someone “thought” they had a 4.2 when they really had a 4.0 (one point higher than my own).

It seems what he is saying for the “self-reported” is you will probably have a list similar to the SAT long questionnaire one filled out prior to registration.
you will probably select the classes you took and the grade you received…
It will calculate the UF GPA for you…

And probably have to submit an electronic signature saying all info correct or your acceptance can be rescinded…

Anyways, that’s my assessment of the “self-reported” GPA

Georgia Tech and other schools also do the online self reported grades to get a GPA for admissions. My DD didn’t have any issues with that last year.

There is one VERY big advantage to submitting your application ASAP - the priority list for housing. About 2 days after submitting your application you can get on the housing priority list and pay $25 for the privilege. This is well worth doing. Housing is tight at UF and if you want a choice of dorms apply ASAP.

Ugh I don’t like the idea of a self reported GPA for the simple fact that people can be dishonest and even if that means they get their offer rescinded that doesn’t mean that the deserving students who should’ve had that spot in the first place will gain acceptance.

And if self reported GPAs make things easier we should also get our decisions earlier

@2013cheer- Your analysis of the self reported GPA is speculation.

@ohsoambitious-the decisions will still be sent out the second Friday in February (as always)-this year that would be Feb. 14th

To BornToBeaGator:

As 2013cheer said, “probably” and “my assessment.” You’ve been very critical of people who actually are Florida Gators and are trying to help. Your first page post was partly speculative as well, but you called her out for some reason. You’ve done this in the past with other Gators. People pull info from offsite and don’t source it, and you call them wrong. Even most baby Gators have been to Preview. We’ve sat down with advisers who answered our questions in their offices. Many of us just want to help, and also, sometimes we might have inside information that prospective students haven’t been told. Some people speculate, but they usually phrase their posts in a way that makes it clear they’re not 100% certain.

You’re not a Gator yet, and I hope you show more courtesy in the future to the student body you so badly want to be a part of.
