Is this a bad thing? I was homeschooled and I wasn’t aware until this year that you could also self-study AP. I always thought AP was a type of course taught at school like History 101.

I think it depends on what was available to you. If you went to a school with AP options and didn’t take them, then it wouldn’t look good. However, there are programs that don’t believe in AP or offer alternatives like IB or duel enrollment instead. We know kids from these types of programs that get into Ivy league level schools despite lack of AP.

I can’t comment on how they handle homeschoolers and AP. If you took challenging courses outside the norm it will probably be OK. The homeschoolers we happen to know haven’t reached for these schools but got into quality programs none-the-less. Only the admissions office can really answer this but I would just put together your best application and try not to dwell on it too much.

It didn’t come to me before but have you considered taking any SAT subject tests? This might be helpful in your situation and I believe you still have time if applying RD.

I have taken the SAT and I’m taking two subject tests in a few days. I hope that’s enough :)

Homeschooling is such a special situation that I don’t think anyone here can accurately give you a realistic assessment of where you stand… SAT subject tests will definitely help you though!

I think the point is to show that you have a challenging program of study. That may or may not include AP courses. Dual enrollment is another way.
